1- Day Introduction to throwing workshop with Pottery West

We’re excited to welcome you into our beautiful city centre studio for a 1-day intensive throwing course led by Matt. We keep the class size small with just 4 spaces, each student with a wheel each. Matt is an experienced thrower and a patient instructor and the atmosphere is encouraging and friendly. This workshop covers all the fundamentals of throwing pots on the wheel; how to centre clay and create vessels on the wheel, how to turn forms and how to make alterations to forms such as attaching handles and forming spouts. Each participant will have their own wheel set-up and access to tools and equipment, plus lots of guidance from Matt. You don’t need to have any pottery experience to attend this course, although it might be useful as a refresher course for those who have dabbled at the wheel in the past. About Pottery West: Pottery West is the studio of Catherine and Matt West - makers, designers and potters - we’re now a team of four and create wheel-thrown ceramic tableware and decorative pieces for the home our of our Sheffield studio. About the tutor: Matt co-founded Pottery West in 2015 and has been working with clay since 2013. Specialising in thrown functional ware, you’ll often find Matt at the wheel either leading on our production pieces or else working on new designs. Matt originally trained as a designer, graduating from Goldsmiths in 2011 and also worked as a baker before re-training as a potter.

What's included in the price?

We will fire and glaze one (and if relevant, more than one) finished piece and post to you after the course has ended. All equipment and materials will be provided. Aprons will be provided but please wear suitable clothing that you don’t mind getting covered in clay. Please wear suitable footwear. Once you’ve made your booking, we will contact you via email to discuss your plans, aspirations and interests so that we can tailor-make the session. Lunch and refreshments will be included - please advise of any dietary requirements upon booking.
