Monoprinting For a Day Plus Lunch

X

Description

This is an immersive five-hour printmaking experience, including lunch! It's the most in-depth and bespoke workshop I do! Monoprinting is my favourite printmaking process because it is the closest to painting. It is spontaneous, vivacious and fun! Come on your own or bring a friend or relation and share the cost! Mono-printing can be many things; it simply means the prints you pull from the printing plate are non-repeatable. Each print is unique! You will use rollers and a variety of ink colours to build up your designs - print by print - using collage materials and the "ghost print" to add depth. You will apply your ink to a flexible plastic plate and use my intaglio printing press to pull the best quality prints onto top quality paper. Depending on the pace you work at, and whether the printmaking gods are smiling down on us, you might go home with 6 to 8 unique, original prints. Come with your own inspiration or I can help you with that when you come!

What's included in the price?

Inks, paper and all sundry materials required to produce your mono-prints (depending on time and the pace you work at, you might go home with up to six unique, original prints) A seasonal lunch that will typically consist of: WINTER - soup, artisan bread, cheese, fruit. SUMMER - anti-pasti, salad, cheese, fruit. I source my vegetables from a nearby organic farm. I serve Dorset-produced food where possible. I can cater for vegetarians, vegans and any other dietary needs, as long as you let me know when booking! Pet allergies: we have a dog (Border Collie cross) and she likes to welcome guests with a hand sniff.

I have been teaching 2-day printmaking masterclasses in my home studio since 2014 and I reached GOLD level on craftcourses.com with 5-star reviews. I took a break from teaching in 2023 but here I am again under a different name. This time I am focusing on providing shorter half-day workshops (not just printmaking) that are more affordable and fun. My studio is comfortable for two plus me, and because of this I can offer a cosier, bespoke creative experience. I am located in a picturesque village location in Dorset and I bake a very good Dorset apple cake.

FAQs

I provide lunch with Dorset produce where possible.

I buy my veg from a local organic farm and will use whatever's in season to make a soup during the cooler months and salads in the summer. These can be served with meats and cheeses.

There will be a home-made cake, quite probably a Dorset Apple Cake that I have been making since I first learnt how to at 7 years of age.

I buy artisan-made sourdough bread from a Dorset bakery.

I will happily make alterations to suit your dietary needs; just let me know on booking.

Monoprinting is a printmaking technique that produces a unique non-repeatable image by transferring ink from a smooth surface to paper. With imagination, chutzpah and a little serendipity you can build up layers of ink on the plate after each run through the press. This allows you to create a wonderfully vibrant series of print "siblings" that are not identical but share a connection because they were printed on the same day and with the same materials. I like to incorporate textured paper cut-outs for added drama, but you don't have to! Monoprinting is the most "painterly" of the printmaking techniques and would particularly suit anyone who likes to work in a loose, abstract way as well as those who already experiment with collage.

For complete printmaking beginners, I break the process down into a step-by-step guide to get you started.

If you provide details of your dietary needs, I will ensure I provide biscuits and snacks that are safe for you to eat.
I cannot guarantee they will be from a Dorset supplier, as detailed in the workshop description. Please feel free to bring along your own tea bags if you prefer decaffeinated, but I always have a good supply of Yogi herbal teas. I will not be offended if you prefer to bring your own biscuits/snacks for peace of mind, particularly if you have a nut allergy or are coeliac.

I live in a pretty village near Blandford Forum in Dorset. My home has a stunning view over fields to the woods on the horizon.

The studio is a dedicated space in my home where we can create in peace.

I provide ALL the materials.

I provide drinks and cake (please let me know if you have dietary concerns). If you prefer to bring your own favourite t-bag, no problem! I usually have standard teas and coffee and a good supply of herbal teas.

You might like to bring a folder to take your prints home safely.

Come dressed for mess; the inks are oil-based etching inks that will not wash out! I will teach you to ink as cleanly as possible, but it's not worth spoiling a brand new top or expensive trousers, if a tiny bit strays off the inking plate!

Best to avoid an expensive manicure until after the workshop - despite the use of gloves (that I provide) some ink may get on your nails. With some olive oil rubbed in, the ink can easily be removed.

I usually make a Dorset Apple Cake that contains - amongst other things - butter, egg, flour and a little milk. This is the recipe I have been using since I learnt to bake it at 7 years of age.

I can adapt this recipe to include non-dairy margarine, non-dairy milk and gluten free flour. I have never made this cake without using egg!

If you have any dietary concerns, please feel free to contact me before booking so we can find the best solution. I am happy to provide an alternative cake or biscuits.
