Handmade Paper: a hands-on introduction

X

Description

A full day workshop exploring an introduction to handmade paper, with focus on hands-on time designing, pulping, pulling and pressing your own sheets. Jemma is a self-taught handmade papermaker who uses floral industry waste to create handmade papers and is passionate about helping others learn to make and enjoy handmade paper. Creating and engaging with handmade paper is a tactile, sensory and enriching experience that can be difficult to find in todays digital age. Set in the incredible grounds of The English Country House, in this workshop you will have the personal space and time to create meaningful and functional pieces of handmade paper. Book ended by topics of education and discussion, the focus is on hands-on experience of creating your own pieces throughout the morning, as well as making your own functional paper items in the afternoon to take home and use. You will be able to learn about and choose from a selection of plant fibres, recycled papers, and beautiful inclusions in order to design your own papers in the morning. Jemma will bring a supply of different handmade papers for the afternoon’s activities. Further details below :) Who is this workshop for? Anybody looking to learn a new creative skill Anybody looking for a creative gift for friends or family Anybody looking to access workshop space and practice techniques Anybody who has dabbled before - maybe school or college and would like the opportunity to revisit Anybody who is moving through a transitional life stage and may find creative practice useful Anybody who just wants a day away Anybody, really! How is this different to other papermaking workshops? Usually papermaking workshops are a couple of hours or a half day, trying to cram everything in! This will be a relaxed full day, not rushed, with plenty of time on each activity. You will keep your mould and deckle to allow you to make your own papers at home. All materials used are waste from gorgeous Shropshire flower farms. Learn to set up your own individual, creative, tiny studio table. Focus on each persons hands on practice and experience; should be very comfortable to try at home after this! This experience can be tailored to the individual (within reason). Beautiful garden and grounds to relax, eat, create and enjoy throughout your day. This is not intended to teach the ins-and-outs of traditional paper making techniques and historical expertise in one day (although we will briefly visit both!); this is to allow you to start your journey, and provide the materials for you to explore creating something tangible and meaningful. Do I need to do anything in preparation or bring anything with me? The short answer is…no! You are welcome to just turn up with your packed lunch, free as a bird, and enjoy your day knowing everything else is taken care of, even a protective apron for your clothing. Comfortable clothing and footwear is advised, as well as items you don’t mind getting a little wet. Coffee, tea and herbal tea will be supplied but please bring a packed lunch with you – there are no shop facilities on site.
