About this spoon carving course: In this 2.5 hr session you will learn to take a rough carved spoon (called a billet) and using knives turn it into a beautiful cooking spoon for your home. The focus will be on safe and effective use of both the straight knife and the hook knife. About your teacher: The course is taught by David Hunter. I am a coppice and green woodworker. I have been carving spoons for over 10 years now and I love the process of it. It is relatively simple and accessible in regards set up – you only need a few tools and minimal space. Yet it offers a lifetime of enjoyment as it is always possible to improve and explore new shapes and techniques. Skills you will learn: - Safe and effective use of a carving knife and hook knife - An understanding of what green wood work is and why we make spoons from fresh wood - An understanding of the properties of wood and how they effect your spoon carving. - The basics on how to keep your tools sharp. - The basics of how to look after your body when carving.

I am a coppice worker in Pembrokeshire, West Wales. I am passionate about the sustainable management of woodlands using traditional methods and hand tools. From the wood I manage I make household items such as spoons, stools and garden gates.
