Spoon Carving the Scandinavian Way - Beginners
Description
Step into the world of Scandinavian slöjd with our beginners' spoon carving workshop, where the art of transforming fresh, green logs into functional and beautiful spoons awaits. In this immersive, hands-on experience, you'll be guided by skilled instructors who will help you embrace the rich tradition of Scandinavian craftsmanship. Our journey begins with an introduction to the different types of wood ideal for carving and selecting the perfect green log. You'll discover the unique properties of green wood, which, due to its higher moisture content, is easier to carve. We'll then explore the essential tools of the trade, including carving knives, hook knives, and axes. You'll also have the chance to work with tools from esteemed manufacturers such as Wetterlings, Gränsfors Bruk, Morakniv, Robin Wood, and Ben Orford. Safety is a cornerstone of our workshop, and you'll receive thorough instruction on safe carving techniques and tool handling. You'll start by splitting your log and shaping the basic form of your spoon with an axe. As the course progresses, you'll refine your spoon using carving knives, focusing on both functionality and Scandinavian design aesthetics. In the final stages of the workshop, we'll delve into the finer points of spoon carving, such as creating smooth, even surfaces and adding personal touches. By the end of the session, you'll have a spoon and the skills and confidence to continue carving on your own. Join us for a rewarding experience that blends creativity, craftsmanship, and a deep connection to nature, capturing the essence of Scandinavian slöjd. This course runs from our semi ancient woodland site near Warminster with a half hour break for lunch. Minimum age is 18, younger students are allowed by prior arrangement please call us to discuss. We are based in the Southwest of England in easy reach from Bristol, Bath, Salisbury, Southampton, Chippenham, Swindon, and London.
