FAQs
Brightsmiths is all about creativity so we will certainly try to help you make your own design there are practical considerations however which will need to be discussed before your making day
1) Cut your design be made in the time 2) Is the Silver Supplied enough for the design or will you need to purchase more from Brightsmiths? If in doubt just ask
Do you have the necessary skill level , with some help, to make your design . We once had a complete novice who believed she could make a fully Diamond encrusted ring on her first making day….! Nope. Silver Jewellery making is a Skill honed by practice and Diamond mounting (setting) is another highly skilled trade
So try keep things as simple as possible , Silversmithing is fun but it’s also rather Slow …& hard Work at times …there are no short cuts to a well made piece…or to learning best practice…especially for beginners,…but the rewards are great….. even if you have some experience please contact us first so we can give you the best chance of a successful make… and that any tools or materials you may need are ready for your use on your special making Day. Thanks!
We are situated in a very Rural location roughly 6 miles from both Southwold and Beccles in Suffolk
Sat navs can great a bit lost here so details of how to find us will be sent to you once you have booked.
We are very happy to teach Disabled people when ever possible and have some experience in this area…
….However our old Workshops and the Craft itself cannot cater to all Disabilities
Parking can be very close to the entrance but there is still a couple of feet of loose stones to cross and a door lip to enter …There is a ramp from the door to the Bench and we have a small portable forge to teach soldering when using our Usual soldering room is impractical.
The washroom which has a wide door is long enough for wheelchair access but it is not wide enough for sideways transfers or Turning a chair so one must reverse out. There are no lifting handles or special equipment.
Silver work requires some strength in hands , reasonable eyesight (though magnifying headsets are available) and good hand-eye coordination especially for peircing (sawing) hammering & soldering which is done with the flame of a gas torch .
While your tutor will assist when necessary we feel that when students can do a reasonable portion of the Making themselves enjoy the day more fully. We are happy to chat about the possibilities
If you require a carer for health needs or assistance in making they are welcome to attend free of charge.
In all cases please discuss with us before booking to help ensure a comfortable and rewarding experience ThankYou
