Description

Come and discover linocut printing in a beautiful large studio located in the centre of historic Lewes. You will be shown how to design and carve your lino (max. A5 size) and then produce a series of linocut relief prints. You will have the opportunity to experiment with different coloured inks and Chine Colle. You will learn how to make prints by hand, plus how to print lino using a book press. Please note: this workshop is for single cut lino (not reduction printing). This 3 hour workshop is suitable for both beginners and those wishing to revisit or develop their printmaking skills. I encourage an experimental approach to printmaking alongside tips for continuing your work at home.

What's included in the price?

All materials and equipment are included: lino, lino tools, safety hand guards, a range of different papers to print on to, AKUA non-toxic professional printing inks, inking plates, brayers, reference images, materials for Chine Colle, gloves. Plus tea, coffee and biscuits. Please bring an apron or old shirt to protect your clothes as printmaking can be messy! There is no theme as such so you are welcome to bring materials to personalise your work and help you plan your lino design: this might be a photograph, sketch, or any other image you like. I will also provide some reference images for you to use if you prefer.

I am a professional artist and fully qualified teacher with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art and a PGCE specialising in Post-Compulsory Art & Design teaching. I have over 18 years experience working in education and now work as an independent tutor and artist running workshops throughout the year in Sussex, UK. My classes are suitable for both beginners and those wishing to revisit and develop their printmaking skills. I keep group sizes small to allow everyone space to work in a relaxed, friendly, environment and I am on hand to offer practical advice and encourage an experimental approach to printmaking alongside tips for continuing your work at home.

FAQs

Sorry, no. The venue is only insured for people aged 16+

There are 5 car parking spaces outside the studio that are free and for everyone’s use, on a first come first served basis. Please note however that the access road is narrow and one way, so if you have a large vehicle you may find it easier to find alternative parking. There are nearby residential roads with on street parking (pay by phone). The train station is approximately 15 minutes walk away, and the nearest bus stop on Lewes high street is approx. 3 minutes walk.

I suggest you bring an apron or old shirt to protect your clothes as printmaking can be messy. Gloves and hand wash are provided.
Visual resources are provided for every class including printmaking examples and reference images, although there is no ‘theme’ as such so you can explore whatever subject you choose. You are welcome to bring materials to enrich and personalise your work: this might include books/magazines, photographs, sketches, or other images you like.

The studio is located upstairs on the first floor of an old timbered building. There is a stair lift if required. Any equipment (e.g. walking aids or wheelchairs) would need to be carried up the stairs (the tutor will be able to assist). If you have any further accessibility needs please contact the tutor in advance to discuss.
