Description

An opportunity to learn spoon carving from tutor with over 20 years' experience, using axes, knives and crook knives to shape beautiful and functional kitchen ware or treen from small diameter green wood. This craft has enjoyed massive popularity since the Mary Rose was salvaged in the 1990s, with its treasure of hundreds of wooden eating spoons; since then enthusiasts have incorporated aspects of Scandinavian design to develop a vibrant community around this craft. During this one day course you will learn the essentials of safe carving. The day starts with making a butter knife, progressing through making a spatula (stekespade in Norwegian, literally "steak spade"!), through to the more complex project of carving a spoon. Tools will be available for sale for those who wish to carry on with this absorbing craft at home. The source of the materials is all around us in the county– Herefordshire is rich in ancient woodland, and we help to manage them in a sensitive and sustainable way. We use native hardwoods, harvested locally, to be crafted into a range of items, using traditional methods and simple hand tools. Enjoy this ancient and absorbing craft, coached by experienced artisan tutors, and take the fruits of your labour home with you at the end of the day!
