Description

Welcome to The Spinning Barn. English Longdraw hand spinning is often seen as mysterious or tricky but it is a delightful, relaxing method of spinning which produces soft, lofty yarns relatively quickly. The workshop will start with discussing the most appropriate fibres for this technique before learning, or perfecting, the art of hand carding the fibre into lightweight, airy rolags. Then we shall move on to perfecting the longdraw technique to produce those lofty, bouncy skeins of yarn. If you have ever watched a hand spinner happily spinning soft wool into gorgeous yarns and wanted to give it a go, or felt that you're knitting, crochet or weaving could be even more creative if you could spin your own yarns, then this workshop is for you. If you have spun before and want to re-visit a forgotten skill, then here is the chance to do so. If you are unsure of what you need then please feel free to get in touch via the 'message the tutor' button and we can chat about it first. NOTE: if you would like to spend longer perfecting your spinning skills then you can simply book two or more days days together, which will really help to consolidate your learning and increase your confidence to spin alone at home. I am always happy to support your spinning after the workshop to ensure your ongoing spinning success and enjoyment. Workshops are held in the tranquil Norfolk countryside on our smallholding, where you can meet our delightful flock of rare breed North Ronaldsay sheep and Icelandic sheep whose wool you will be spinning on the day. You will learn what to look for when choosing a good fleece for spinning. You will learn the arts of carding, longdraw spinning and plying, using the fleece from our own flock, and will make your very own skein of yarn to take home. I am more than happy for students to photograph or video aspects of the workshop to remind them at home, or just to impress friends and family with! Workshops are currently limited to just three students to ensure lots of 1:1 tuition. The day is very relaxed and informal. Why not take a look at our recent reviews to see what other customers have said about us. I am a qualified trainer and assessor in the Life Long Learning sector, but far more importantly I get tremendous satisfaction from simply passing on the skill of spinning to others. I hope to see you soon. Theresa
