Do you have any special requirements? Work of Iron is a busy forge, you can only - 'Request a booking' this will then be checked and accepted if it is possible to do so. If the date you requested is not available an alternative dates will be on offered. You will only be charged when Work of Iron has confirmed the booking/order. Workshops can be tailored to meet the student's skill level and no experience is necessary however this workshop is moderately hard work and will require physical determination. On the Axe forging workshop, you will spend the morning being guided through the alchemy of blacksmithing and start off with some basic techniques. This will involve a fascinating insight into metallurgy and learning to physically control the fire and forging at the anvil. We will then get started on forging a simple Axe, this involves, marking up, forging, grinding, hardening, and tempering and a final finish. You will spend the day with internationally renowned blacksmith, Jack Waygood. He started smithing at 18 and has had a very diverse range of experience within the craft. Predominantly his passions lie in contemporary architectural ironwork, visual art and sculpture but he is also well-versed in jewellery making, tool making and working as a blacksmith for the television and film industry (most recently over in NZ on the Lord of the Rings). He has also taught blacksmithing at degree level and gets a real joy from sharing his knowledge. This is a practical course, and you will be expected to get your hands dirty! However, there is no pressure and we will work at your pace, Jack will be on hand to help demonstrate and give guidance at all times. This course runs from 9 am - 4 pm with breaks that suit you. Availability is fixed around Jack's working schedule Monday - Friday, currently, we can only teach a maximum of two persons per day. Participants must be age 16+ for insurance purposes and must also let Jack know if you have any special requirements.
