Description
During the Blacksmithing day, you will have the opportunity to learn and experience the ancient elements of forge work. Hands on experience throughout the day includes fire use and maintenance, heating the iron and hammering it on an anvil to produce graceful and long lasting items for day-to-day use. You will gain an understanding of the materials and the age-old processes of working them with skill and appreciation. You will be fully engaged and in charge of the process, choosing from a variety of design ideas and using the correct techniques to forge completely individual, good quality practical and elegant items. You'll be instructed and supported to learn the essential techniques necessary to complete your projects on the day, receiving plenty of tutor attention working in a small group. All projects are individual and completely hand-made, guaranteeing your sense of ownership and personal satisfaction with the fruits of your efforts.
What's included in the price?
All materials and equipment are supplied. Please bring a sandwich or something simple you would like for lunch and a vegetarian soup will also be provided, with refreshments available throughout the day. (For special dietary requirements please do bring along alternatives where necessary). Please wear non flammable clothing such as heavy cotton or wool layers, ensuring arms and legs are covered, and sturdy comfortable boots. Layers are useful in order to regulate temperature and stay protected. The setting is covered but open to the elements so please wrap up warm in colder weather. Aprons and safety glasses are provided.

Maker
Arian is an experiential educator, blacksmith and a knife-maker with over 20 years of experience in facilitating craft workshops in different contexts. He is a trained teacher and has worked with adults and children in public and school settings, craft camps, and has contributed to professional trainings and conferences on experiential education in UK, Sweden and USA. He has trained with famous Swedish Axe makers at Gransfors Bruks, and is inspired by the indigenous Scandinavian Sami craft and knife-making. Arian’s passion is in enabling participants’ personal expression and new learning through the art and craft of working with fire and iron. In his course facilitation Arian prioritises individual participants’ interests and choices, as well as appreciation of the craft process and the nature of the material we work with. He has developed an accessible, tangible and hands-on course structure enabling full participation, learning and ownership in order to provide a personally engaging, meaningful and fulfilling experience for participants.
