Description
On this one-day introduction to the ancient craft of bowl carving you will use traditional hand tools to carve your own breakfast bowl from native green timber. The joy of this traditional craft is that it requires few tools and materials. We will use carving axes and woodcarving knives to shape the outside of the bowl blank and a selection of gouges and hook knives to hollow the inside. Safe and effective techniques of using these tools and working with green wood will be developed. Throughout the course a strong emphasis will be placed on safety. A £10 fee for materials and preparation is included in the course fee We will learn which woods are best for bowl carving and discuss methods for drying, finishing and decorating your work. At the end of the day, you will leave not only with your own hand carved breakfast bowl but also with the knowledge, practical skills and inspiration to continue your green wood carving journey at home. If you have your own carving tools, you are encouraged to bring them although carving tools will be provided for anyone that needs them. All materials will be provided. A good general level of health and physical fitness is required for bowl carving as the majority of the work is undertaken while standing and the carving work can be quite energetic.

I'm Mike Craig, a green woodworker based at the Otley Chevin Forest Park which is situated above the picturesque market town of Otley, West Yorkshire. I have over 20 years experience as an educator in countryside management and wildlife conservation and over 10 years experienced as a green woodwork course tutor. The only thing I enjoy more than carving green wood in a woodland setting is helping others to discover and develop their own green woodwork skills.
