Introduction to Spoon Carving at Steeky Meadow

X

Description

This 1-day class will teach you the skills to create your very own spoon from scratch, using traditional hand tools and techniques, with a focus on understanding how wood behaves as a material. Starting from a freshly cut log, you will cleave a spoon blank, design your spoon, hew the rough shape with a hand axe, hollow out the bowl with a crook knife, and finish the form and handle with carving knives. You will learn how the growth of a tree dictates the form and texture of wood which in turn dictates how you can carve and shape it. Understanding how wood behaves is a skill that can be transfered to many other crafts and trades. We will cover how to use sharp tools safely and effectively, learning correct grips and techniques for various tools. Will we also learn the basics of tool maintenance and how to care for your wooden spoon into the future!

FAQs

While there is a workshop shelter on-site, all our sessions take place outdoors, so please dress appropriately for the weather! Sturdy footwear is recommended, especially when it has been raining, since it can be wet and slippery underfoot. It's also a good idea to wear clothing that you don't mind getting a bit dirty, as that's a common hazard of outdoor crafts!

All the tools and materials you require will be provided. However, if you do have your own hand tools, you are welcome to bring them.

Hand tools are sharp and therefore can be inherently dangerous, however the best way to avoid injury is the careful and safe use of proper techniques.

Steeky Meadow is located in Milton Combe, near Yelverton, Devon. Just a 5 minute drive through the lanes from the A386 Plymouth to Tavistock road. Please do not try to follow your satnav to the site as it will very likely lead you wrong!
