Hi, I'm Philip, a designer-maker from York, UK.
In the first decades of my profession, I specialised in creating bespoke hands-on exhibits and educational materials for museums and visitor attractions across the country. However, my tenure at iconic institutions like Cornwall's Eden Project and the enchanting Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales significantly piqued my curiosity in making art from reclaimed materials.
Now, Quick Sticks Workshop serves as my creative playground, where I revel in the act of bringing my imaginative ideas to life. My primary objective is to spread “the joy of making stuff”.
My artistic endeavors are frequently influenced by industrial design, sustainability, and an inherent sense of whimsy. My preferred medium is the creation of captivating automata, which are essentially playful, kinetic sculptures that blend art with design.
Beyond that, I extend my craft into the production of themed "build your own" style kits and provide educational tutoring sessions, allowing others to explore and experience the magic of this unique art form alongside me.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about my artistic pursuits!
Best regards,
Philip

(For 2 Persons) Beginner Woodwork - Automata Making
"Excellent evening of Beginners Woodwork with Phil. He is really knowledgeable, very patient and very encouraging. I would thoroughly recommend anyone interested in having a go at woodwork to do this course. I am looking forward to booking another course with Phil at a later date to advance my skills. The little boat automata is fun to make and very satisfying when you bring all the component parts that you have just made together."
Quicksticks Workshop responded:
"Thanks Fiona, we did pack a lot into a short time didn't we, besides the good banter. Glad you enjoyed the experience, and met your goal of feeling more confident with tools. See you next time "
"Great from start to finish. As a total beginner, Phillip took time to understand what I wanted to achieve and the sessions were well planned so that I used a range of tools and techniques. Phillip kept it fun, informative and well paced. Very happy with my project and the experience."
Quicksticks Workshop responded:
"Hi. As this was a custom project to frame your earlier stained glass project, we were both taking a leap of faith in the design and practicality for a self described 'beginner'. But well done, it looks great."
"Such a great course! Having never done woodwork before, Philip was very patient and made it seem easy. I made the bird box and was so happy with the final product. Would definitely do another course! Thank you!"
Quicksticks Workshop responded:
"Hey Sarah,
I'm thrilled you enjoyed making the double decker birdbox. Do let me know if you'd like any of the 'making in process' photos. Cheers"
"Philip kindly prepared materials and technical drawing for our project and guided us step by step to complete kitchen roll holders.
It was informative and fun and Philp was extremely nice and patient.
Highly recommend this course for anyone who is interested in craft.
Thank you Philip!! We may book another one in the future."
Quicksticks Workshop responded:
"My first couple on a craft session. You two were great fun. The competitiveness!! Lol. Glad you like the design I came up with and had fun. See you next time."
