(For 2 Persons) Beginner Woodwork - Automata Making
Description
This is a full day of tuition for you and your quest. Please see my separate listing to cover the same outcomes in a 3 hour session if you prefer 1-to-1 tuition. Full day sessions include refreshments and a lunch break (please bring your lunch). This course is aimed at introducing you to beginner level woodworking through the construction of a simple automata (that's basically a charming, little, moving artwork). The pictured "bobbing boat" is the model I am currently teaching. My goal is that you have some fun, experience a range of tools and techniques, ultimately taking home a piece of work about which you can proudly say “I made that”. My standard sessions are six hours (sometimes running slightly over). With plenty of guidance, you’ll start from a pile of wood, then mark out, saw, drill, shape and assemble a whimsical moving artwork. You’ll learn to safely use a range of hand tools, power tools (e.g drill, jigsaw) also some bench power tools (e.g. fret saw, bandsaw, pillar drill, belt sander), as appropriate to the project. Sessions usually run at the dates/times listed, but feel free to contact me via the 'message the tutor' button to discuss flexibility. Fridays (advertised dates): 09:30 to 15:30. IS IT SUITABLE FOR YOU? Total novices welcome. This session is especially suitable for those with little or no skill or experience. Plenty of guidance is given. Those with existing skills and experience are also welcome. Maybe you don’t have access to a workshop at the moment but are feeling creative. Or you might want to make a surprise gift for someone. Unfortunately, this activity is not fully accessible. But, please get in touch to discuss any specific access requirements you have and I’ll try to accommodate them. Additionally, for this particular activity, you’ll need to be comfortable standing at a high workbench for periods of time and capable of completing manual tasks, with instruction. VENUE: My well-equipped studio is at our family home, within walking distance of the beautiful York City Centre. On arrival, please come to the rear gate on Pinfold Court YO30 6NE. Foot: 30min walk from York Station, 20min from York Minster (city centre). Bike: There’s plenty of space in our private rear garden to lock your bike up. Bus: Route 2, outwards from city centre or inwards from Rawcliffe Bar Park and Rides, getting off at Clifton Green. Car: Park on the road at the rear of our house.

Maker
I've always loved making, and have been fortunate to work in creative roles for over 25 years. Two employment stints, at the legendary Eden Project and magical Centre for Alternative Technology stoked my interest in art from recycled materials. In 2019 I setup Quicksticks Workshop. My goal, to impart the joy of making, through handmade products, educational kits and practical sessions. I also now help teach Design Technology. The busy school day a perfect contrast to my quite studio.
