Description
My goal as a Designer - Maker, is to "spread the joy of making stuff". “Retro Rocket” automata kit is one of a series of works that demonstrate simple mechanisms and encourage an interest in crafting. Visually, I guess I like to make things that reference human achievement against the backdrop of the natural environment. The kit contains everything required to make the wooden automaton including wood glue and sandpaper. Paint not included. It may take up to a couple of hours (plus painting time) to complete depending on your skill level.
What's included in the price?
The kit is designed by myself here in York, UK. The top quality plywood is laser cut locally and packaged up with my photographic instructions which are clear and easy to follow. You will learn about a simple mechanism, the cam, which converts rotary motion into reciprocating motion. There are two in the model. When the handle is cranked, the rocket launches forward in it's orbit of the planet whilst the astronaut bobs up and down attached to his life-line. Due to the plywood being laser cut, there maybe a small amount of soot on the edge of parts. So best not assemble it on your best white table cloth. Please feel free to ask me any questions you may have, I'm happy to try and accommodate requests.
What you will need
Care and maintenance of your automata: Avoid prolonged direct sunlight which could fade the paint. Avoid excess humidity, which could swell the wooden components. The model is not a toy and should only be used by children under responsible adult supervision. Excess for force or misuse may damage the mechanism. To clean, use a dry duster only. After prolonged use, the surface of cams maybe rubbed with a wax candle to reduce friction. ***This item is NOT A TOY.

Maker
I've always loved making, and have been fortunate to work in creative roles for over 25 years. Two employment stints, at the legendary Eden Project and magical Centre for Alternative Technology stoked my interest in art from recycled materials. In 2019 I setup Quicksticks Workshop. My goal, to impart the joy of making, through handmade products, educational kits and practical sessions. I also now help teach Design Technology. The busy school day a perfect contrast to my quite studio.
