Tapestry workshop - making art on small looms
Description
My style of tapestry lessons are focused on producing small ‘works of art’ which can be mounted and framed. My background is as an artist - so I like to bring those skills to my woven pieces. It doesn’t have to be complicated and I can show you how to achieve great results. If you pick up books you will think that starting tapestry feels a bit daunting - all the different looms, words like 'sett' and ends per inch, not to mention all the yarn choices. I remember feeling very confused and frustrated but there is no need. I hope to give you a better understanding of the terminology - learning about what warp/yarn to use, shapes, hatching, colour blending, different looms etc. There will be plenty of time to answer any weaving questions on a 1-1 basis. We will work on small metal looms from the US maker Mirrix. But I can also show you how you can use a home made loom from an art canvas with the same results.
What's included in the price?
I will look after you for the day in my lovely weaving studio on the ground floor of Box Studios in Newcastle upon Tyne. My looms - I will have a variety of looms you can choose to work on: Mirrix (specialist metal looms from the US): 5" Saffron pocket loom, 5" and 8" Chloe looms 12" Tall Loom 28" McKinley loom Wooden Looms: basic frame loom (I'll show you how I made it) I love different looms as they have different purposes which I can discuss with you. It's good to practise on my looms before committing to a more expensive one of your own (if you wish but not necessary). Tools - I will supply the tapestry needles/yarn for the class. I can advise on where to purchase from if you'd like to continue your journey. You could also bring to future workshops. Class details: After an initial introduction, I will help you design a piece on a loom of your choice or you can just play and freestyle. I just want you to have fun!!! We will use tapestry yarns - I have a good choice of medium width wool to begin with and you can add in finer yarns as you advance. We can discuss shapes, hatching, colour blending, interlocking techniques etc (which I will have samples of). From practise at previous workshops, you will most likely create a piece around 4 to 6 inches in height during your day which you can take home. I can also show you how to mount and frame your finished tapestry. (I'm happy to frame for you too if you complete a piece.) Aftercare: you will be invited to my private Facebook tapestry group to help you continue your journey. Coffee/drinks will be provided throughout the day. We are next door to the lovely Biscuit Factory art gallery where you will receive a 10% discount voucher for lunch/drinks on the day. Feel free to bring a packed lunch too or there is a supermarket nearby!
