Description

Join artist Jessica Grady for a relaxing and creative day-long workshop exploring colourful doodle stitching as part of Dunblane Ecofest 2025. Creating a doodle stitched cloth is a lovely way to experiment with hand embroidery stitches, different yarns, wools, threads and creating patterns and doodles on your fabric background. It’s a fun way to stitch as there is no set pattern, and the doodle stitching evolves and grows as you add your stitches and threads to the fabric, it’s about enjoying the process of hand stitching! The day will begin by preparing your doodle stitching background with some patterns on fabric bases using paints, stencils and mark-making tools. This gives you a starting point for stitching later on in the day! Then whilst the backgrounds are drying, Jessica will demonstrate a variety of her most used, simple yet versatile embroidery stitches for you to try on a small sampler. Hand embroidery stitches taught will include: straight stitch and variations, couching, ruffle couching, french knots, blanket stitch, chain stitch and needle weaving. Then when you move onto your main doodle stitching fabric, Jessica will give you her best tips and tricks for layering your stitches, building patterns and textures on the surface, and doodling with your needle and thread to create a unique doodle stitch artwork. Jessica will have lots of her artist samples and doodle cloths to inspire you throughout the workshop, and will also be bringing along her selection of recycled threads, ribbons and yarns for stitching with. This class is suitable for all abilities, whether you are completely new to hand stitching, or someone who would like to experiment and try out something new! You will leave the day with your own colourful doodle cloth that you can continue to grow and work into after the workshop. All materials for the class are included.
