Description

Embark on a journey into the world of traditional woodworking with our immersive two-day Pole Lathe making course. The pole lathe, a reciprocal lathe that dates back to the Viking era, is traditionally powered by a springy pole. In this course, we'll supply you with a modern twist—a bungee cord to power your lathe, making it both efficient and easy to use. Our pole lathe design is inspired by Mike Abbott’s acclaimed work, featured in his book, "Working with Wood, the Natural Way." This course offers a unique blend of historical craftsmanship and practical modern techniques, allowing you to build a tool that has stood the test of time. On the first day, you will start by constructing the A-frame legs, made from durable treated softwood. This foundation is crucial for the stability and longevity of your lathe. Our expert instructors will guide you through measuring, cutting, and assembling the frame, ensuring a precise and sturdy build. Next, you'll move on to crafting the body of the lathe from high-quality ash or beech. These hardwoods are chosen for their strength and resilience, making them ideal for the rigors of woodturning. By the end of the first day, you will have the primary structure of your lathe assembled and ready for further work. Day two focuses on the finer details. You will finish making the poppets and the treadle, essential components for the operation of your lathe. The poppets, which hold the workpiece in place, and the treadle, which you’ll use to power the lathe, require careful crafting to ensure smooth and efficient operation. Our instructors will provide detailed guidance and hands-on assistance to help you perfect these components. Once your pole lathe is complete, you’ll have the chance to put it to use. Experience the joy of turning greenwood, enjoying the fresh scent and the tactile pleasure of working with freshly cut timber. This course not only equips you with a functional pole lathe but also imparts valuable skills and a deep appreciation for traditional woodworking techniques. Join us and create a tool that will serve you for years to come, while enjoying the fulfilling experience of crafting with your own hands. No previous woodwork experience necessary. This course will run from 9.30am to 4.30pm, each day, at our Marlborough site.
