Description

Join me in this fun 9 week adult art course, suitable for all abilities. Wednesdays 1-3pm Blacon, Chester Oct 30th- Dec 18th inclusive Each week we will delve into the fashions of each decade and illustrate them. Taking a look at the superstar celebrities and designers who defined the looks of the era, from Josephine Baker and the flapper girls of the 1920’s to Christian Dior’s ’New Look’ of the 1940’s and Bohemia of the 60’s!   Fashion illustrations are a brilliant way to evoke the spirit of a particular style or decade. It is one of my favourite ways of illustrating people, bringing out character and style through drawings and I would love to share my skills and passion for the subject in this series of workshops.    Every week I will start with a short demo, illustrating key elements of the decade we are studying. Using a range of expressive materials such as watercolours, marker pens and ink to suit the fashions of the decade. Using a range of expressive materials such as watercolours, marker pens and ink to suit the fashions of the decade.   Week 1- Introduction - Oct 30th   Introduction to fashion illustration. How to draw the proportions of the body, basics of figure drawing, angles and basic fashion silhouettes. We will explore techniques when using different mediums in trying to capture the texture of a garment.    Week 2- The Roaring 20’s - Nov 6th   The era of flapper girls and jazz clubs with influential stars such as Josephine Baker and revolutionary designers such as Coco Chanel changing the female silhouette with her androgynous designs.  We will explore the art of Vogue covers of the decade.    Using this inspiration we will design our own 1920’s style fashion illustration.    Week 3- Hollywood 30’s - Nov 13th   Hollywood’s golden era was beginning, with stars such as Ginger Rodgers, Jean Harlow and Marlene Dietrich. Fabrics were fluid and bias cut. We will be inspired by Hollywood glamour in our illustrations, using fluid materials such as ink to represent the satins and silks.   Week 4- The New Look 40’s - Nov 20th   In the post war years with an end to rationing, Christian Dior created a brand new silhouette with his ’New Look’- with wide shoulders, nipped in waists and voluminous skirts. Styles were bold and dramatic- perfect for exaggerated fashion illustrations    Week 5- The Hourglass 50’s - Nov 27th   Taking inspiration from screen sirens such as Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn in Givenchy and Marilyn Monroe.     Week 6- The Fab 60’s - Dec 4th   Taking inspiration from the London fashion scene of the 60’s, from the clean cut, graphic designs by Mary Quant and Pierre Cardin, featuring models like Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton to the Bohemia of the late 60’s and the Biba effect! We will use era defining patterns and colours to set  the scene.   Week 7- Disco Fever Seventies - Dec 11th   A decade of contrasts, from the hippy, folkloric looks of the early 70s to Disco Fever with its slinky jersey and lurex fabrics and the rise of Punk, the seventies had it all, with lots of colour and pattern too!   Week 8- Dec 18th Bring a photo of yourself looking your most fashion fabulous to feature in your own fashion illustration! Christmas theme, fun and festive!  About the Artist Katie has 20 years experience as a printed textile designer in the fashion industry, designing international brands including Zara, Marks and Spencer and Anthropologie.
