Sketching and Painting at Benton End

Description

Join Carole Massey for Sketching and Painting at Benton End. This is a new initiative and an exciting opportunity to visit and sketch this historic 16th century house and its beautiful gardens, which will once more become a place for artistic and horticulture as it was in the time of Cedric Morris and Lett Haines. We will spend the day sketching and painting in the grounds. Carole will walk you round the garden, pointing out suitable painting places and views of the house, then give a short demonstration in pen & wash to inspire you with ideas! You can choose to work in sketchbooks, creating a series of pen & wash studies, or take more time over a painting in watercolour. After the demonstration, Carole will teach on an individual basis for the rest of the day. Suitable for all abilities. Travel to & from Benton End will be by minibus from Flatford Mill. In the event of rain, we will be able to work indoors. About Benton End Benton End house and gardens in Hadleigh, Suffolk is the former home of celebrated artist and gardener Sir Cedric Morris (1889 – 1982) and artist, Arthur Lett-Haines, known as Lett, (1894–1978); lifelong partners, they met on Armistice Night in 1918. Together they ran the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing – a sanctuary for a diverse range of influential artists, writers, musicians, and botanists of the 20th century. Lucian Freud and Maggi Hambling were among their students. Vita Sackville-West, Beth Chatto, Paul and John Nash, Elizabeth David, Constance Spry and Benjamin Britten all frequented the house.
