Description
Are you thinking of starting your own small leather goods business, or just starting out as a hobby and happy to see where your new skills lead you? Our Two Day Practical Skills Course is aimed at beginners interested in gaining a good understanding of the leather working skills & techniques used in making a variety of small leather goods. We do have some flexibility on the dates, so do email us if you don't see dates you can attend. The aim over the 14 hours is to save you.... and move you on at least a year of you trying to figure out all of the who, what, where, when, why of working with leather. You'll be pleased to hear you won't be saddle stitching for 14 hours solid! Over the two days you'll be making 4 or 5 items, such as a 1 slot card holder, a tuck flap cardholder using both the glued and non-glued construction and a leather belt, these small items will show you the different skills/techniques that you can then use or scale up later at your own pace. You will also cover and practice the following, either in making your items or as separate tasks; Tanned leather types - assess leather for intended use. How to select/buy your leathers UK Leather Merchants/Finishers/Tanneries and swatch samples of leather types. Hand stitched thread types and needles - waxing - saddle stitch and a wrap stitch. Hand cutting tools - Pattern cutting - Formers Small batch production cutting Bevelling - Skiving - Splitting - Creasing - Burnishing Rivet types, eyelets and hardware closure options and setting tools. All belt and strap cutting hand tools. Logo's - Deboss with and without a Hot Foiling machine. Options to set up an online webshop. Bag design, and how to start pattern making. You’ll be shown and encouraged to practice using the various traditional and modern leather working tools on off-cuts of leather to build your familiarity and confidence. You'll also receive a detailed info pack on each day summarising everything covered in the 2 days along with info on where you can buy your leathers, tools and hardware in the UK so you can take your new skills forward at your own pace, along with current e-commerce website options to build your own website, and afterwards can contact anytime for further queries as you develop your designs/skills.
