Rick first picked up his turning tools in 2008 as a distraction from his IT day job. From the first shaving that flew off a cheap and cheerful second hand lathe, Rick was hooked and woodturning was the future.
Through watching many of the best demonstrators on the circuit, undertaking challenging commissions and spending hours at the lathe, Rick has developed his skills and style of turning. He has established a reputation for exploring turning outside of the ‘Round and Brown’ often incorporating alternative materials into his pieces. Rick is best known for his off centre and multi axis work, in particular the multiple axis pieces turned on a jig he has developed.
Rick regularly demonstrates at clubs and events across the UK presenting technical projects aimed to inspire others to broaden their turning ambitions and ideas.
Rick provides training from his well-equipped workshop in Derbyshire including two high end lathes for students to use.
"Great course, got to work on 2 different projects for woodturning and learnt a lot of new skills, Rick was really informative and explained techniques and concepts well and was really patient and helpful."
Rick Dobney Woodturning responded:
"Thank you very much Lewis, I'm glad you enjoyed your day with me. Well done with your two projects, you should be proud of what you achieved. All the best - Rick"
"This was my first experience of wood turning. Rick was excellent at explaining the various techniques and tools to be used. His explanation of good workshop practice was very reassuring that I was in a safe environment. His workshop while small is well provisioned for 2 students. Rick encouraged and complimented me and showed patience. I thoroughly enjoyed the day and would not hesitate to recommend attendance.
The day finished with Rick offering to assist/advise in the future with wood turning but also with obtaining and setting up equipment.
A great day. Thank you."
Rick Dobney Woodturning responded:
"Thank you very much for your kind review Steve, I'm glad you enjoyed your first woodturning experience with me. I hope to be able to help you to progress further in due course. All the best Rick "
"Rick is an excellent tutor, clear in his explanations and methodical in his approach. I was very pleased with the high quality of my finished product,- a lidded box, - due to the high standards he follows and the expectation that his student will work, even as a novice, toward the same precise result. Along with all that I found Rick to be very friendly and adaptable to individual needs and ability as the day progressed."
Rick Dobney Woodturning responded:
"Hello Clive, apologies for the delayed response.
Thank you for your kind review, I'm pleased that the training came across well and that you found the day well paced to suit your needs.
All the best
Rick"
"Thoroughly enjoyable day with attentive tuition and a really nice atmosphere. Rick made myself and the other student both feel highly supported and yet gave us choices and opportunities to really get productive. Learned so much -the time flew by-and yet the pace and structure of the day was ideal.
Also a nice relaxed lunch and a very pleasant time in their company. Highly recommend this tutor and his workshop!"
Rick Dobney Woodturning responded:
"Thank you very much Andrew for your kind review, I'm delighted that you enjoyed your day with us and that the course met your requirements.
Many thanks - Rick"
