Painting classes and workshops with Kate Freeman
Description
As a painter with a background in Textile design, my passion has always been colour. Over many years of personal practice and teaching others, I have developed a workshop programme to benefit anyone interested in developing their own work. Using water-based and acrylic media, I teach a series of four painting ‘themes’, suitable for all levels of experience. Each lesson is delivered as a practical exploration of either colour mixing, mark-making, experimental techniques or composition. Choose one subject for a half day session, two for a full day - please note “Composition” is a full day class - or attend the two day workshop, which includes all of the above - please refer to additional listings for details. Each painting exercise will be clearly explained, and I will demonstrate techniques and provide assistance or advice as required. All of the skills acquired during these sessions are applicable to students’ own work, whether Abstract or more traditional subject matter. We will be investigating the ‘nuts and bolts’ of making paintings, not “painting pictures”! During each session, we use a variety of tools to apply paint. Many of the exercises are great block-busters for those days when you want to paint, but don’t know where to start. Experienced painters who wish to work in a more free, spontaneous way will also benefit. COLOUR MIXING half day class (10am - 1pm or 2pm - 5pm) Focusing on a limited palette, we will be using primary colours to mix nuanced hues and their complementaries. Tints, tones, harmonising colour schemes and tonal contrast are all features of this class. You will gain the ability to understand, and have better control of your use of colour. MARK MAKING half day class (10am-1pm or 2pm-5pm) We investigate the expressive potential of line, experimenting with unusual tools to create marks and textures. Expect to find feathers, sticks and old toothbrushes amongst our equipment for this class. You will begin to develop a language of marks which may be easily explored at home. Another great way through creative block! EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES half day class (10am-1pm or 2pm-5pm) Things get messy! We will experiment with layering, splattering and basic printing methods to produce vibrant glazes and subtle textures. As well as being a really fun introduction to Acrylic paint, this session is great for experienced artists who wish to “get out of a rut”, or have fun with freestyle techniques. Please note - wear old clothes as acrylic paint will not wash out! I look forward to welcoming you to the Coach House.
