Description

It can be daunting getting started with woodcarving, from getting to grips with what tools you need, to choosing the right timber for you project. Our 1 day crash course in hand carving will give you all you need to get started. Over the course of a day we work through understanding grain direction and how this affects your carving to when to use different chisels to tackle your carving project. To book, choose you preferred course date and fill out all your details. Once booked, I will send you through all the information you need for the course including how to find us. All tools and materials are provided for your course so you don’t need to bring any tools with you. We will start the day with carving some simple shapes to help you to understand how grain direction affects your technique, then move on to carving a panel with your initials and a decorative border. At the end of the day, you will have tried carving both lettering and simple shapes. Carving is a skill that can be a challenge especially if you are looking to carve into something that you have spent time making or something that is precious to you. Once you have had a go and mastered the techniques we go through during the course, you should have the confidence to try your own projects and overcome any challenging carving projects. FAQs

You will be using ANH Artisan’s tools during the course which will have been sharpened and prepared prior to your arrival. Unfortunately, you cannot use your own tools during the course as they may not be sharpened and set up safely and correctly for the day and we will not have time to prep additional kit. However if you have your own woodworking tools that you want to bring for advice on how to use them or set them up/sharpen then please do so, but they will be your responsibility to look after and ensure they are safely stored

The workshop is located within a former quarry which means some of the paths can be a little uneven underfoot. The workshop is accessed via a long ramp and we have accessible toilet facilites to the rear of the workshop. Our aim is to make our courses available to every woodworker, however please be aware the nature of the work we undertake duing the courses can be physically challenging, therefore if you have any questions or concerns regarding accessibility please get in touch and we can discuss how to accomodate your needs.
