Maker's bio

Rooks & roses is the jewellery brand created by Karl Smith; a designer-maker skilled in a number of disciplines but predominantly working in silver-smithery and jewellery-making. Working organically, and inspired by nature, his handmade jewellery range includes dragonflies, stags, bees, fungi and leaves. Many of his pieces are made using recycled and upcycled materials.

"I have just done the Introduction to Jewellery Making weekend course with Karl and enjoyed it very much. The atmosphere was relaxed yet a lot was covered and some lovely pieces of work produced. Karl is an excellent instructor as he is able to impart technical information in an easy-to-understand way and is happy to answer questions. I felt I learnt a lot which will greatly help my own work. I thoroughly recommend this course."

"My friend and I have just spent a very informative and productive whilst relaxed and inspiring weekend with the very talented Karl Smith (Rooks and Roses) at his fully equipped, organized workshop in the glorious, scenic Holme Valley. Karl generously imparted knowledge, under a watchful eye not just on how to construct a piece but also delved into the fascinating science behind the ‘alchemy’ of metal into personally handcrafted ‘treasures’. We thoroughly enjoyed our time spent with Karl, departed with some lovely pieces and would highly recommend this workshop."
