Maker's bio

STOP PRESS: CHAMPION BLACKSMITH 2024. I was honoured to receive the Champion Blacksmith Award by the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths at their Awards Luncheon in London on 24.10.2024. I am Richard Bent FWCB, a Silver medal holder from the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths. I offer Experience Days in the Basic Skills of Blacksmithing from my well equipped workshop/forge in Halwell, Nr. Totnes, Devon.   I offer tuition to the absolute beginner and those who may wish to build on previous experience.  The student will leave the course having produced several different projects and an overwhelming sense of achievement.  My first interest in blacksmithing was watching Blacksmiths working at County Agricultural Shows. I was Hooked! I had to learn more! How? Where? No You Tube! Only books from which to learn. No Craft Courses in those days! I read and practised all I could, then started in business as a self taught blacksmith. I watched other blacksmiths and ‘stole’ with my eyes! So here I am, with over 45 years experience, running my own courses; I offer all students over the age of 17 years the opportunity to be me for a day! You will create some beautiful pieces to “Wow” your family and friends.

Jack Parker reviewed: Blacksmithing course - spend a day in the forge

"An incredible experience. I learned a lot and gained confidence in lots of different tools. Richard is an extremely knowledgeable and helpful person. You have the freedom to explore different tools and techniques but Richard was never far if you needed help or guidance. I would recommend this experience to anyone, regardless of if you have any experience with tools you’ll have a great time. I will definitely be back for another go! "

Red Anvil School of Blacksmithing responded:

"Thank you for your kind review Jack. It was a pleasure to meet you and pleased you enjoyed your Blacksmithing experience. Richard"

Anil Sahal reviewed: Blacksmithing course - spend a day in the forge

"A fantastic course, led by a very patient and generous teacher (Richard Bent). He gave clear instructions, demonstrated the use of various tools from hand hammers, tong, gas and induction forges and power hammers. We were led through the process of making a couple of easy projects, how to draw out and round rectangular sectioned bars. Richard was a delightful, down-to earth person to chat with during our breaks, replete with knowledge and anecdotes and we all felt safe under his watchful eye. He made this experience absolutely brilliant!"

Red Anvil School of Blacksmithing responded:

"It was a pleasure to meet you Anil, and really pleased you enjoyed your day. Thank you for your review. Kind regards Richard "

David Llewellyn reviewed: Blacksmithing course - spend a day in the forge

"Richard was an absolute pleasure to have as a tutor. He struck the balance perfectly between professional blacksmith and patient and caring master of his trade imparting his immense knowledge to absolute novices. The day was paced superbly offering plenty of time to work with the various techniques shown during Richard’s induction. His patience was unlimited and his time spent between the two of us on the course was judged perfectly to allow us to make our own decisions (and mistakes). This was an amazing experience and personally one I will be doing again as I’m fortunate enough to live locally. If this is something you would like to try, I cannot recommend it enough. With Richard you will not only be in safe hands, but in the presence of greatness. (Just look at all his accolades!)."

Red Anvil School of Blacksmithing responded:

"Thank you David, I always enjoy the courses and was glad to hear you gained so much too. I will look forward to our next meeting. Richard "

Mike Bruce reviewed: Blacksmithing course - spend a day in the forge

"Richard was absolutely fantastic and sympathetic to my lack of skill. Watching him at work demonstrating certain elements made it look very easy. As I embarked on my solo trial couldn't have been so wrong! Coordination with the hammer and rotating the piece of metal took a bit of time to sort out! Well worth the money and an experience I hope to do again in the near future."

Red Anvil School of Blacksmithing responded:

"Firstly, thank you for your positive and glowing review it is much appreciated. Secondly, and most importantly we are so pleased you had a really enjoyable day and hope to see you again in due course. Richard "
