Maker's bio

The Dorset Stone Carver runs stone carving and sculpture courses from our studio based in the rolling hills of the Marshwood Vale within the AONB of West Dorset. Local towns Bridport, Lyme Regis and Charmouth are a stones throw away as is the world heritage site of the Jurassic coast with all its fossil hunting delights. Camping and glamping is available within a couple of minutes walk from the studio and there are also plenty of B&Bs, hotels and campsites within the surrounding area. We offer courses for all levels, from complete beginners looking to test the waters or just have some fun through to more experienced stone workers looking to hone their skills and everything in-between. We are also happy to tailor an experience to meet your needs. Visit the course info page or our website to find out what you could learn! Why not visit us to learn a new skill and stay to explore the wonders of the local area!   The Dorset Stone Carver was founded by stone carver and sculptor Ben Russell. Having originally trained in Applied Architectural Stonework and Conservation at Weymouth College in Dorset, Ben went on to continue his training undertaking a course specialising in Historic/Architectural Stone Carving at the City and Guilds of London Art School. Over the following years he was lucky enough to work upon buildings, monuments and locations such as Highgate Cemetery, Kew Palace, The Tower of London, The National Portrait Gallery, The Albert Memorial and The Houses of Parliament to name a few. Commissions during this period included a grotesque for St Georges Chapel, Windsor Castle, two large relief carvings for County Hall London and a commemorative plaque for Goodenough College unveiled by The Queen. He received a number of awards whilst training and received a Duke of Gloucester for his carving work within the industry in 2013. Alongside his work in the heritage sector Ben creates sculptures inspired by our grown environment. After gaining recognition for his work via a solo show at Hignell Gallery, Mayfair in 2017, he returned to his home county of Dorset to continue to focus on his own work and to start The Dorset Stone Carver. He now divides his time between sculpture and teaching traditional carving skills. Bens has nearly twenty years combined training, site experience within the heritage sector and experience working as a professional artist so we feel the knowledge you will gain on one of our courses is second to none. Ben will adjust his teaching style to help each student get the most out of their time here in a calm and patient manner.  Visit benrussell.co.uk to see Ben's own sculptural work or thedorsetstonecarver.co.uk for further info.

"I can highly recommend Ben's course to anyone who wants to loose themselves in a wonderful creative and inspiring weekend. I had never done anything like Stone Carving before, but It was such a freeing and enjoyable process and I came away from the weekend with a beautiful abstract sculpture that has pride of place at home. Ben was a patient and great teacher, he lets you navigate your own ideas and gently nurtures you in a positive way showing you the skills to create fantastic details and stone work. I would love to do the course again, It was so very enjoyable, not to mention the great company and delicious lunch Ben made for us all. "

"I really loved the beginner stone carving course with Ben Russell. Having originally discovered Ben's work on show at on form at Asthall Manor a couple of years ago, I was really inspired by his work and naturally curious when I saw he was offering a course. I wasn't sure what to expect, and if I'm honest, was a little apprehensive, especially as I hadn't really made anything with my hands in a very, very long time. It was the perfect weekend, super relaxed, good company, coupled with great teaching skills and direction without it feeling too intimidating; and while the Dorset weather blew in and out, it only made it better as we had the comfort of Ben's yard to keep us protected while we worked alongside the elements. The whole experience was really enriching, igniting further creativity in me to explore, whatever the outcome. Sometimes you have to push yourself out of your comfort zone and just have a go, I'm so pleased I did. I would recommend this course to anyone, plus it was especially inspiring working alongside Ben's work, which is just incredible - a testament to a true artist / sculptor, and very humbling to understand the level of patience, detail and skill that goes into stonework. Thanks Ben, I really hope to be back."

"Not only is Ben a brilliantly gifted sculptor of beautiful, intricate pieces, but he’s also a very cool guy. His workshop in the middle of nowhere (Barn Owl Buildings, Denhay Farm, Broadoak) is idyllic. You can bash away at a piece of sandstone, only disturbing the local Dorset wild life. Ben is a master sculptor with a fount of knowledge and experience, which he generously imparts. Working at your own pace, Ben is there at all times with positive help and practical advice. I learnt so much on this course, though two days wasn’t enough to complete my over ambition piece, imagining myself as the next Henry Moore. Bonus points for constant tea and coffee and the great picnic lunches. "

"Had a brilliant weekend up in Dorset with Ben. His workshop may be a concrete sileage pit but he has turned it into a little Eden! An amazing place to learn this craft. Ben was a great teacher, patient, willing to let us get on and generous with sharing his hard earned knowledge and skills. I felt truly inspired after the weekend and have been chipping away at my piece of limestone since. Would recommend to anyone who wants to give it a go! "
