Key steps in building a ukulele over 5 days. Selecting wood: Choosing appropriate wood types for the top (often spruce or cedar), back and sides (mahogany) and neck (mahogany) based on desired tone. Body shaping: Cutting out the rough shape of the body from the wood, then carefully shaping the curves and thickness of the top and back using tools like a bandsaw, plane, and rasps. Sound hole cutting: Precisely cutting the sound hole in the top of the body, often with a rosette inlay for decoration. Bracing: Installing internal bracing structures within the body to provide structural support and influence sound characteristics. Neck crafting: Shaping the neck profile, including the headstock, and cutting the fret slots. Joint creation: Making precise joints to connect the neck to the body (neck heel) and the headstock to the neck. Fret installation: Installing frets on the neck, ensuring proper spacing and level. Binding (optional): Adding a decorative binding around the edge of the body and neck. Finishing: Applying a finish (like varnish or oil) to protect the wood and enhance its appearance. My love of woodcraft was due to a meeting with a guitarist friend who had made an acoustic guitar. We talked about his guitar for many hours and I thought it would be a challenge for me to have a go! Well that was 6 years ago and now in 2023 I am in a small workshop in Stoke where I build various instruments. The Strumstick instrument build is a great way to get to grips with fine woodworking and is an ideal step towards acoustic guitar building. No experience in woodwork is needed.
