Introduction to tapestry weaving

Description

The Wiggly Path Company invites you to escape into nature for a day of creativity at the serene Harehope Quarry in Weardale. In this workshop, set in the picturesque Wear Valley near the village of Frosterly, you’ll learn the ancient craft of weaving. Designed for both complete beginners and those with some weaving experience, the workshop covers the basic principles and terminology of weaving, guiding you to create your own small woven piece using a frame loom. Under the guidance of Textile Artist Sarah Wilson, you'll start by exploring examples of woven work for inspiration. The class begins with making your own simple hazel wood loom, selecting yarns from the available stock. You'll then learn to warp your loom, twine the warp, and introduce weft yarn using plain weave techniques. The workshop also covers how to change weft colours and create three-dimensional textures using Soumak and Rya knot techniques. Finally, you’ll gain an understanding of finishing techniques to remove your weave from the frame. For those with some experience, the workshop offers an introduction to more advanced techniques, including creating shapes and shading, with access to a wide variety of yarns to experiment with texture and colour blending.
