Description
This 2-day course is suitable for beginners (no previous experience necessary) or experienced carvers. Learn about these fascinating medieval green men and take your own completed sculpture home in Maltese limestone. Course Details Arrival for 9am for a prompt start. A tour of the facilities will be given with a health and safety induction. Beginners will learn how to hold a chisel and mallet. They will learn how to chase a line, rough out and finishing techniques to create their own relief carved green man. Advanced students will also learn undercutting techniques. Students will work on a pre-laid out design of a green man in this condensed weekend course. A soft limestone will be used which is suitable for all ages and strengths to carve. The Facilities The West Riding Stone Carving Association is a large well equipped workshop with individual work spaces and a large selection of hand carving tools and stone working equipment. Tutors Students will learn by observing the experienced and qualified tutors John Swift (West Riding Stonecarving Association[WRSA] co-founder, Chairman and European Stone Carving Festival People's Champion of 2016) and Helen Jukes (WRSA tutor, WRSA Secretary and British representative at European Stone Carving Festival). Students receive substantial individual attention as places are limited to 12 students per course. Early booking is recommended to avoid disappointment. The entrance is on Boys Lane, which is around the back of the main mill entrance. Use postcode HX3 9EZ for workshop entrance.
What's included in the price?
Course fees include all materials and use of tools. Students will be supplied with a good quality piece of Maltese limestone. Tea and coffee with biscuits and fruit are also available throughout the day. We recommend bringing a packed lunch. Car parking is free and available on site. We are also within walking distance of Halifax Railway Station. Personal protective equipment is also included, except steel toe capped shoes which we recommend although sturdy shoes will be ok. We also recommend that warm old clothing is worn by students.
