Craft Your Own Carving Bench or Chopping Block

Description

Spend a day in the woodland workshop working with an experienced craftsman to make your own carving bench or chopping block. Carving benches, sometimes known as a claves or bowl horses are perfect for a range or greenwood crafts. It functions as a stable chopping block with the added ability to clamp pieces of wood in place using wedges. Starting with a log and a few basic hand tools you will first shape the legs on the shave horse using a draw knife. Then learn how to fit the legs using round mortise and tenon joints. Finally cut the notches in the top to crate the surfaces to work on. By the end of the day you will leave with some new skills and a functional carving bench suitable for spoon carving, bowl carving and a range of other woodland crafts. This course will be held under a large shelter but please come dressed for the weather as we will be outdoors for the whole day. No previous experience required.
