Spend a day in the woods, crafting your own rustic three-legged stool at our woodland workshop. Using ash wood sustainably harvested from the site, you’ll learn to shape components with hand tools and assemble your stool using traditional joinery techniques. Nestled deep within an ancient woodland, our off-grid workshop is fully equipped with the tools and devices needed to transform timber into beautiful, functional pieces. Under the expert guidance of Matt, our skilled course instructor, you’ll begin by crafting the stool legs. Using a drawknife and shave horse, you’ll shape the wood into smooth, tactile forms, a satisfying process that gives your stool its handcrafted charm. Next, you’ll choose a live-edge slab for the seat, each piece featuring unique grain patterns and natural character. To join the legs to the seat, you’ll create precise round mortise-and-tenon joints using an auger and rounding plane. Finally, with a few finishing touches, your stool will be complete—ready to be oiled or varnished at home. Throughout the day, Matt will demonstrate safe tool use, share expert tips, and offer assistance as needed to ensure you leave with a stool you’re proud of. Enjoy hot drinks throughout the workshop, with a kettle kept warm over an open fire. This course takes place under a larger shelter. Please wear clothes suitable for the weather as we will be outdoors for the whole day. Drinks are provided but please bring a packed lunch.
