Description

Runs from 10am - 4pm (ish) . Held at Llangathen Temperance Hall, Llangathen, Carmarthenshire, SA32 8QD. In this workshop you will learn how to make one cobweb broom and at least two woven brushes, one smaller and one larger, made from broomcorn fibre. You will learn how to sort broomcorn stalks, how to weave brushes, how to bind the broomcorn onto the wooden broom handle and how to stitch the fibre together. We will also discuss the history of brush and broom making and the type of fibre that we will use. If there is time left at the end of the day, you are welcome to make a third brush of your choice A selection of hardwood dowel broomsticks and a variety of colours of nylon thread will be provided for you to choose from. If you’d prefer to bring your own special stick to use as your broomstick, please do! Please send me an email immediately after booking so that we can make sure your broomstick is suitable. A vegetarian lunch will be provided. If you have any dietary requirements, please let me know. Please note that broom and brush making is surprisingly physical, so you need a reasonable amount of dexterity in your hands and feet, as well as good grip strength. If you have any questions about this, please do get in touch before booking. The broomcorn will be soaked before use so will still be damp - you might like to bring a small towel with you to keep your lap dry. Some warm socks to wear could also be useful as we will be working with our shoes off! Feedback from previous workshops: "I LOVED this workshop, thank you Rosa. It was really well organised with more than enough equipment for everyone and the style of demonstrating followed by step by step instruction worked perfectly as everyone could work at their own pace. We all achieved so much in a day and am genuinely delighted with my brushes. You are a brilliant teacher: calm, clear and extremely patient, even when having to repeat instructions several times." "The excellent instruction, visual and verbal, was so helpful along with Rosa’s calm and skilled approach to sharing her talent. The group was a good size ensuring sufficient one to one as necessary and the materials provision and preparation was excellent. Lunch was brilliant and it was great to be able to buy supplies for taking home." "It was fun, engaging and coming away with a broom was excellent!" "A lot of care was taken in developing the workshop - thank you. I tried lots of different craft workshop and this was probably the best including value for money."
