Cobweb broom and woven brush workshop with Rosa Harradine
Description
In this workshop you will learn how to make one cobweb broom and at least two woven brushes, one smaller and one larger, made from broomcorn fibre. You will learn how to sort broomcorn stalks, how to weave brushes, how to bind the broomcorn onto the wooden broom handle and how to stitch the fibre together. We will also discuss the history of brush and broom making and the type of fibre that we will use. If there is time left at the end of the day, you are welcome to make a third brush of your choice A selection of hardwood dowel broomsticks and a variety of colours of nylon thread will be provided for you to choose from. If you’d prefer to bring your own special stick to use as your broomstick, please do! Please get in touch immediately after booking so that we can make sure your broomstick is suitable. A vegetarian lunch will be provided. If you have any dietary requirements, please let me know. Please note that broom and brush making is surprisingly physical, so you need a reasonable amount of dexterity in your hands and feet, as well as good grip strength. If you have any questions about this, please do get in touch before booking. The broomcorn will be soaked before use so will still be damp - you might like to bring a small towel with you to keep your lap dry. Some warm socks to wear could also be useful as we will be working with our shoes off! Runs from 10am - 4pm (ish).
