Description

The besom broom has been a staple of traditional craftsmanship for centuries, deeply rooted in folklore, practicality, and ritual. Made from natural materials like birch twigs and hazel handles, besoms were the original broom for sweeping hearths, paths, and barns. Their simple yet effective design made them indispensable in households across Europe and beyond. Besoms also hold a special place in myth and legend. They are famously associated with witchcraft, often depicted as the magical "flying brooms" of folklore. In reality, they were a practical tool, sometimes used symbolically in ceremonies and rituals, such as "jumping the broom" at weddings to signify a new beginning. In addition to their historical and cultural significance, besoms remain practical for outdoor sweeping tasks. Their natural materials make them ideal for sweeping debris like leaves and dirt from uneven surfaces. Today, they are also prized as decorative items, adding rustic charm to homes and gardens. Whether used for practical chores, seasonal rituals, or as a nod to tradition, the besom broom continues to capture the imagination and preserve a connection to our shared craft heritage. Your day with us - You’ll learn the age-old techniques of making a functional and beautifully rustic besom broom, perfect for practical use or as a decorative piece.
