Our research shows two thirds of UK dream of a practical & creative way of life
The research was carried out in order to gain a deeper and more accurate understanding of the UK’s appetite for art, craft and practical skills, with fascinating results. The study consisted of a sample size of 2,012 voluntary participants, and data was collected for analysis from research question responses.

Do your dreams match your reality?
The research uncovered that the vast majority of UK people were dismayed by the fact that certain skills are dying out. For example, the skilled hand processes required within the making of industrial pottery are at serious risk of no longer being practiced.

85% of the people who took part in the study are aware of this tragic decline in traditional skills, yet many have not learnt a new skill within the last 5 years. Without actively raising awareness and interest with the wider public, these skills are in danger of being lost forever.

85% of Britons aware of the tragic decline in traditional skills
In view of the fact that a majority of us in the UK claim to dream of a creative and practical way of life, what are the barriers to people being able to learn new skills? According to our research, some of the most significant barriers are financial constraints, a lack of time and simply not knowing where to begin.

Opportunities to engage with and support independent craftspeople have never been more important. Passing on important skills safeguards the future of the UK’s traditional industries, which feeds directly into vital sectors such as engineering on a fundamental level.
