The certification process is rigorous, and it took us over a year to reach the final hurdle, back during Christmas 2021 (a nice present that year!). B Corps companies are re-assessed every 3 years to verify that they still meet the high standards of this certification. "Using business as a force for good™" has been built into our articles of association and is considered in all decisions.
The B corps team look at all elements of the business to calculate our overall impact, on partners, customers, employees, society, and the environment. The fundamental goal of the assessment is to prove that we treat people and the planet well. Everything is examined; from how waste is disposed of (we compost everything we can on site) to the impact our courses have on people (50K excellent reviews so far from happy customers!).
Based in Pembrokeshire in Wales, we cover the whole of the UK and represent over 5,000 independent UK makers, artists and craftspeople. Our mission is two fold; helping independent craftspeople and artists to make a living from teaching and to help people access the fantastic benefits of being creative and making things.
The CraftCourses company was founded back in 2011, but our roots are in a rocking horse making business in Yorkshire, that was established in 1980. It was obvious that as much as customers loved the handmade wooden horses, they also relished the opportunity to learn the skills required and make their own… often going on to make a whole herd for family and friends!
This fascination with making and doing, rather than simply buying a product, is something we hear a lot from our makers. People want to create their own, get hands on, find out about the process, techniques and design options. They want the joy and pride of knowing ‘I made that’.
Interest in practical and creative skills not only helps us all become more useful at fixing and making things, but it helps us live in a less consumerist way. We can mend and make, not throwaway and re-buy. We can sustain independent makers, instead of global Big Tech.
One sure thing is that absorbing ourselves in creative pursuits brings an incredible amount of relaxation and satisfaction. We enjoy the sensations of texture and colour; we connect with the earth and a deeper part of ourselves. The busy mind chatter switches off as we concentrate. This deeply human act of creating is essential to our overall wellbeing, individually and as a modern civilisation.
