"A fantastic course, I thoroughly enjoyed my day and would highly recommend to anyone wishing to try out some skills in woodcarving. I didn't imagine we would be turning out a spoon from a log of wood in the time that we had, amazing. Robert was a great instructor and made the course enjoyable with his enthusiasm, in-depth knowledge and good humour throughout the day. Oh, my spoon looked superb, all others did also."

"A really enjoyable experience. Robert is very knowledgeable in this medium, and was keen to inspire us to create our own bespoke carved spoon. As an absolute beginner who had not used these tools before (Robert is very patient!) I learned the basics of a new skill, and created a beautiful (and functional) spoon. The day was great and left me keen to learn more about wood carving."

"We had an excellent day with Robert! He had lots of spoons on show for inspiration and talked us through the types of wood they were made from. We got to handle different types of tools. We had a choice of woods to work with - I went for some Lime! Robert is an excellent and patient teacher, making adjustments for techniques that work for each individual! It was relaxed and almost meditative day - lots of fun and some good chat. Plus you get information on how to acquire your own tools and continue developing your carving skills! Would definitely recommend you book in."

"This was an amazing workshop! Robert was great in explaining every step of the process and he was willing to encourage and support individual projects and explain different techniques of spooncarving that could be used to achieve the desired spoon shape. Me and my partner attended the worksop together as an activity for our 5th anniversary (wooden anniversary) and the whole experience and the spoons we carved will stay in our memories for ever! This was the best workshop I ever attended in my life and I hope more people get to experience the joy of crafting something with their own hands with the amazing guidance of Robert :) "

"What a day! Robert gives you just the right amount of information, inspiration, help and guidance yet you always know its your spoon you are creating. I made new friends, learnt skills I never thought I would and took home a functioning spoon to boot. Absorbing and rewarding."

"This was a brilliant day which absolutely flew by. Having never wielded an axe in my life or being a particularly crafty person I could not believe that I left the workshop with a magical little spoon that I am so proud of! Rob is a brilliant teacher with great patience giving us all exactly the right amount of help and guiding us through the process. I definitely recommend this workshop. Not only will you leave with some brand new skills and appreciation of wood carving but you'll meet some lovely folks into the bargain. Thank you."

"Great to spend a day in a relaxed atmosphere and learn a new skill. I now have the confidence and skills to create my own spoons. Brilliant. Well worth the money which is high praise from someone from rural Aberdeenshire! "

"Had a fab day on Rob’s recent workshop. Absolute novice (don’t think I have ever even held an axe never mind wield one!) The time absolutely flew by. Rob is a great teacher and helped me out just the right amount when I started struggling a bit, owing to a pre-existing arm injury. Still very proud of my handiwork ! "

"I thoroughly enjoyed the course. Robert’s passion for wood, and making useful tools from it, is infectious. Robert is also very patient with us novices! The day flew by (we had to be reminded to stop for lunch) and it was very informative, learning about the different woods for carving and the carving techniques that can be used. To start with a log from a fallen tree and finish with a carved spoon at the end of the day is a great feeling and incredibly rewarding. A great course and would absolutely recommend it."

"This was a really great course. Robert demonstrated how to use an axe to create an oblong blank then how to chip away the excess wood. The whittling knives purposes and techniques were then explained. Like most beginners I was often approaching the tasks from an awkward angle. Robert skilfully corrected any wayward work and encouraged progress. A thoroughly enjoyable day, and my first spoon will be one of many."

"The spoon carving course with Robert was a great way to learn the basic skills. Robert is patient and knowledgeable - sharing his experience and craft in a gentle, encouraging way. Wrap up cos the workshop is chilly but TBH you don't notice cos the time goes so quickly....you'll be focused from start to finish! The spoon is already in use and part of the furniture. Thanks for a great day Robert."

"I attended one of Robert’s Craftwood courses yesterday (Saturday 5th March 2023). Robert patiently and expertly took a small group of complete novices through the various techniques, from splitting a log and carving right through to completing a hand-made spoon to take home at the end of the day. The course is completely hands on and great fun. I hope to attend future events. The workshop is conveniently located right beside Queens Park Station off Victoria Rd in the Southside. This course is highly recommended. "

Ian reviewed: Sharpening carving knives and axes

"I would throughly recommend this course for anyone wanting to learn the dark arts of knife sharpening. Robert was a great tutor, showing, explaining and guiding with clear and concise instructions. Where I was unable to follow a certain action, Robert offered another way that suited my abilities. Even though the course was for three hours, Robert continued on till I was familiar with the skills I required to sharpen my tools. Robert is a very knowledgeable and friendly person who made the course an enjoyable experience. "

Touchwood Glasgow responded:

"Thanks for the lovely kind words, Ian, it was a pleasure to work with you through the sharpening processes. Hopefully you've got a good idea how to keep your tools in ship-shape now. I discovered that you'd left a honing stone some days after our sharpening night - it was camouflaged in amongst all the woody things on my workbench, hence it escaped our eyes when you were packing away your equipment! I will keep it for you, and you can drop in sometime that suits you to pick it up. All the best - and thanks again ?? "

"One of the most challenging aspects of learning spoon carving for me was keeping my tools sharp. Roberts demonstrations and instructions simplifies the whole process for me and gave me the confidence to repeat the process on my own. I can say that I have been able to take this knowledge away and apply it myself at home. I am now able to enjoy carving at home and have definitely improved my results in my carving."

"I have done many woodwork courses and a few spoon carving courses, this is definitely the best. You learn everything you need to be able to confidently create your own spoons, wood selection and splitting, use of the axe, sloid and hook knife and go home with a beautiful object . Robert is relaxed and knowledgeable. Everyone on the course was friendly, it was a really fun day."

Ian reviewed: Sharpening carving knives and axes

"This is a course I would recommend for anyone who is new to the dark arts of knife sharpening. It was extremely an informative and helpful hands on course. Robert took me through the individual stages of sharpening an axe, carving knife, and a double edged hook knife. Seeing I was struggling with the hook knife he assessed my failings and found a better method that suited my abilities. When I finished the course I left with three very sharp carving tools and the knowledge of how to maintain those sharp edges. Robert was very good at passing on his knowledge of knife care as well as being very friendly and generous with his time. When I suddenly realised (surprised that the time had passed so quickly) it was 30 min passed stopping time and was ready to stop, Robert said it was fine and continued on till we had finished the final sharpening. The course was good value for the money. If you want to learn how to sharpen your carving tools I throughly recommend book a course with Robert. ?"

"Was given this course as a gift for my birthday. I had a fantastic day, from meeting Robert and the other carvers to finally coming out with a spoon. The atmosphere is very relaxed, with plenty of space and time for learning and figuring out how to get a fresh log to turn into something resembling a spoon. All of the tools are provided, are very sharp, and are clearly explained before you're let loose on the unsuspecting wood. It was a really great day, and I'm very grateful to Robert for the teaching, and to my wife for the gift. Highly recommend."
