"Myself and my Partner recently took part in Max's Sloyd workshop, and what a brilliant day it was! First off, he was very flexible with our dates and allowed us to change last minute due to work schedules. It was just the two of us and Max during our session, and he made us feel welcome and comfortable from the offset! Not only was he a fantastic and knowlagable teacher, he was also kind and encouraging, and overall a lovely person to spend and afternoon with. Leaving with our spoons have us a genuine feeling of accomplishment, and has left both of us wanting to continue our Sloyd journey! Bonus points for the fire/lovely environment Max has made in and around his workshop"

HM reviewed: Spoon Carving - Sloyd Workshop

"Max is a gifted teacher and we spent a wonderful Sunday at his beautiful workshop. He teaches methodically, introducing each step of the carving process and new tool, and gives as much or as little assistance as you like. He really teaches to impart skills that can be used outside the workshop - sets you up well do go out and continue carving on your own, or return for another course. The wood blocks provided were special and have made for lovely spoons. Highly recommend spending a day with Max woodworking by the crackling fire! Coffee, tea, biscuits and lunch round out the day."

Max Sconyers III responded:

"Thanks so much HM! It was truly a pleasure to have you both in the workshop for the day. And, your spoons were so great! Happy Carving!"

"What a great day I had. Max greeted us at 9.50 and the day flew by from there. I had some practical knowledge, but this course was still well worth doing and I did learn a lot. All in all it was a 10 out of 10 day for me. Thank you Max. "

Marta reviewed: Spoon Carving at Wilderness Foundation UK

"I booked this workshop as a surprise date for my partner and we had such a great time! Max is amazing at explaining anything wood-related and his friendly attitude and passion for wood carving made the whole workshop truly enjoyable. Starting from a block of wood, in 5/6 hours we managed to create beautiful spoons of different shapes! We loved having the opportunities to learn how to use all the tools for wood carving, from the axe to the hook knife. I recommended this workshop already to many of my friends and I’m considering getting the tools to start wood carving in my spare time! Thanks again Max, hopefully see you soon for another workshop! 😊"

Max Sconyers III responded:

"Thanks Marta! I had so much fun teaching you and your partner. It was a special group that day. You are a keen spoon carver. Let me know if you need any tool recommendations! See you again soon!"

"A great day with a great teacher. Max talked to us and showed us not only how to do it but why we do it. He started with a talk about the background of Sloyd and then showed us the wood and talked us through the different properties that you need to be aware of when making a spoon, before leading us through all of the steps. I had previously watched videos online, but the day spent with Max was so much more worthwhile. In fact we were so engaged we forgot lunch and I didn't even notice how sunburnt my knees were until I got home! I would certainly recommend the course for anyone interested in learning this craft. "I booked this event as a gift for my Mum for me, my brother and Mum to do together. And I’m so glad I did. It was genuinely one of the best experiences I’ve done and would highly recommend it. Max is extremely talented, a fantastic teacher and a kind person. What made the whole day so special was how relaxed it was and how comfortable we all felt. I can’t believe we started the day with a piece of tree (with the bark!) and ended up with a wooden spoon we could actually use. It took a lot of hard work chopping and concentration with the knife but I’m really proud of what I did. Max did a great job explaining and showing the different techniques so we could do it all ourselves, but if we needed some extra help he quickly helped us catch up. I bought this just as something fun for us to do as a family but I found the experience so rewarding and relaxing that I’ve actually got myself a couple of the tools so I can do some more. And I think my brother will too. Thank you Max for the most fantastic day - a really memorable and enjoyable experience! 💚"

Max Sconyers III responded:

"Thank you for the kind words Tash! It was a pleasure to meet you and your family. I'm so happy to hear that you have been inspired to start on your own carving journey. I am always here for any questions or further tuition. Cheers!"

"What a great workshop! From beginning to end, thoroughly enjoyed every minute! Max is a great teacher, guiding us through each step of spoon carving with heaps of knowledge, kindness and patience, especially as we’ve never done any form of carving before. The workshop space is tranquil, the food was delicious and super happy with our spoon and spatuloon 😂. Both me and my husband had a fantastic time and would highly recommend. To say this workshop is good value for money is an understatement! Honestly can't thank Max enough for a great day, a great experience, and a great first dip into wood carving, leaving us wanting to do more."

"Can't recommend this course enough! Shared a chilled Saturday afternoon with my 12 yr old son, learning by doing, in Max's peaceful garden workshop. Max is delightful company but also somehow manages to be completely relaxed and completely in control of things at the same time. I think there must be very few situations I would feel OK watching my son swinging an axe, but this was one of them! It was so enjoyable, and learning practical skills together felt like an easy, natural way to spend time with my growing son. Thanks so much Max! I really appreciate what you do. "

Max Sconyers III responded:

"Thanks MC! It was such a pleasure working with you and your son. What a great young man and great mum. You’re welcome back anytime. "

"This course was absolutely brilliant, my wife and I had an amazing time. Max was the best instructor, he explained everything clearly and in a very relaxed manner. It was easy to tell how passionate he is about wood and spoon carving and this really elevated the day. He constantly checked in on our progress as we all carved the spoons together. The lunch over the fire was also brilliant, a nice touch to the day. Highly recommend to anyone thinking about learning to carve a spoon. "

"Thanks for the kind words, Jack! It was a pleasure carving together. Hope to see you two around. Happy Carving!"

"We did the workshop with Max and had a great day. He's very knowledgeable, friendly and super helpful. It's certainly a challenge, but a very rewarding one; next time I see the price of a hand-carved spoon, I will be more understanding. The location is lovely, and it comes with tea, coffee and bics. Would definitely recommend"

"What a special day spent in the woodland experiencing the expert craftsmanship alongside the maestro Max Schonyers. I left pretty chuffed with my newly acquired skills and carrying my hand crafted wooden spoon as promised and an unexpected gift of walnut oil. Highly recommended… especially that the fee for the days outing goes to important and good causes. "

Max Sconyers III responded:

"Thanks Jillian! Wonderful day of carving together. Cheers!"

"Max is an amazing teacher! He carefully explained each step of the process and was always there to lend a hand if you were struggling. Max showed us all how to safely and effectively use all the tools as well as answering any questions we had. Everyone was free to choose the template they wanted and had the chance to make changes to the design along the way. I found the experience not only very satisfying but also extremely relaxing. We all came away with an awesome, unique and functional spoon!! Will definitely be back and can highly recommend :)"

"I did this course with Max on Saturday. It was brilliant. Really good fun. Max is a great teacher and very knowledgeable. The day was well structured, the environment is great (like sitting in a forest but whilst actually in an urban garden!) and we got lunch cooked up on the fire pit. As someone with zero creative ability, I came out having hand carved a wooden spoon that I can actually use! Max was really attentive and walked around helping everyone during the course. We were in really good hands all the way through. Recommend to anyone who wants to learn a new skill, would also be pretty good for corporates as a team building activity. It's really collaborative and nice as a group activity"
