Spoon carving for beginners reviewed: Spoon carving for beginners - morning

"What a fantastic afternoon! So lovely to take a moment out of busy London life to get back to our roots and work with our hands! Stephen is a brilliant instructor and also wonderful company for an afternoon. And as for the carving, an hour and a half taster had us all thoroughly hooked, we could've stayed for hours! Thank you Stephen for an amazing experience, we will definitely be looking into visiting for more!"

"Highly recommend doing this course as an introduction to carving. I learned some great skills and actually produced something that resembled a spoon!! Would probably recommend two sessions to complete although I came home and instantly ordered a spoon carving knife to finish the job. Stephen is an excellent tutor and the whole session was really fun yet set in a really relaxing atmosphere that takes you out of the busy life you may lead outside..The workshop is fully stocked with good quality tools and incredible ongoing works. Book now.. You won’t be disappointed! I can’t wait to do my next course."

"This course was wonderful. Stephen is an exceptionally talented, warm and open guy. You cannot come away without being creatively inspired. He gives you helpful direction and also allows you space to experiment. He guided us through a communal project together (we built a willow den) before sending us off to work on our own projects. I made a lovely sphere garden sculpture. It’s a good idea to research what you might like to make beforehand (Pinterest is helpful) and send any pictures to Stephen in advance so that he can prepare. A great experience. If he was based near to where I live (in West London), then I would go for an inspirational “fix” every week. Thank you."

"A wonderfully inspiring and thoroughly enjoyable day! We all worked together on a sculpture in the morning which, apart from being good fun, was an excellent way to introduce us to each other and to the different types of willow. In the afternoon we concentrated on personal projects. Stephen was extremely generous, encouraging, patient and helpful. His knowledge is extensive and invaluable. I learnt a tremendous amount and look forward to learning more; in fact, the only problem I can foresee, is that willow weaving could become addictive!"

"Really great experience! My husband and I went along to the space last week and had the best time. I have never carved before, but found my self instantly involved in the process. Not only a great way to learn a new skill, but also to get to know new people, share stories and have a laugh! More than worth it!"

"This was a great experience. I worked with a group of strangers who, over the course of the day became my friends and at the same time we created a willow sculpture which surpassed all my expectations. Working collectively to create a thing of beauty lifted my spirits and gave me new ideas and skills to take home with me. I have great plans for the garden this summer. Stephen, the teacher was quite inspirational and we had tea and cake. What's not to like!"

"I had a amazing day at Creative Nature HQ. The teacher/artist, Stephen, was very friendly and has incredible knowledge of wood carving/sculpture and wood working tools. Stephen started by welcoming me and making me a nice cup of tea. I enjoyed my tea as he gave me a tour of the studio/workshop and its facilities. During the walk around he explained and demonstrated what the tools are and how they are used. After this introduction I was shown how to make a mallet out of a solid piece of Ash. This is a very simple and clever process which was really satisfying to do. After lunch I learnt how strip the bark from a large oak tree trunk. I then got involved in some large tree trunk carving (be warned this is highly addictive :-) ). I sculpted by using a variety of specialist carving chisels and of course the mallet I had made earlier. All in all the day was very enjoyable. The studio is spacious and bright and Stephen was extremely friendly, helpful and knowledgable. Highly recommend this class.......Great day. Thank you Stephen."

"Stephen creates a wonderful atmosphere of group togetherness which produces a feeling of working as a team in a safe environment. Guidance, assistance and encouragement provided is there as and when required allowing scope for all involved to feel that they are contributing to a collective objective."
