Description

If you love words and letters, this is the course for you. This course focuses on carving bold, expressive raised letters into stone. This course is taught in my spacious studio, where we will have plenty of space for social distancing. Each student will have their own work station, and I can provide gloves and face masks. On day one, you will begin by looking at raised letter design, and most specifically Neuland Script. We will then design our letters to form a short word, this could be a name, a house sign, or just a favourite word, in this bold chunky style where the letters are raised out of the stone rather than cut into it. Then we will transfer the letters to the stone and begin the process of carving them out. On day two, we will be doing a lot more carving and refining of our letter shapes, as well as flattening and texturing the background to make the letters stand out. Please note this is a two day course, Saturday and Sunday

"I booked the 2 day stone carving course for my mum's birthday. My husband liked the look of it too, so the 3 of us booked on the course in February. What a great couple of days. It's funny how you can spend all day stood next to each, but hardly talk as you get so engrossed in what you're doing. When you start with a solid block of stone, you can't quite believe you'll have a completed piece by the end it, but we did and were really pleased with what we produced. Zoe was great at showing what needed to be done, ensuring everyone stayed on track and provided help where needed. Zoe's workshop is in a great location, set up to run small group sessions. It was lovely to see some of her sculptures in the workshop too. A very talented lady :o) We were very well fed and watered on both days. Zoe and Paul supplied great home cooked lunches along with tasty cakes and biscuits. We all really enjoyed the weekend and would love to come back and try the letter carving course."

"What a wonderful experience this weekend course was. The spacious studio allowed a comfortable working environment for beginner students and Zoe, a very thorough and helpful teacher, guided us to our hugely satisfying outcome. A lovely stone planter each. We were made very welcome with teas and coffee and a delicious, home cooked lunch had in friendly company each day. Hard work and a few aches have definitely not deterred my itch to keep going. I too, am researching tools and would love the opportunity to continue learning and practising stone carving. "The two of us on the course started with a block of limestone each and after two days (12hours ) of hard work we finished with very presentable garden planters with bird motifs.( Our choice). It was a thoroughly rewarding time and so stimulating that I have put in an offer on some stone tools! As a teacher Zoe was empathetic, encouraging, patient and always helpful. Lunch was included and included home made bread, soup, savoury items and puddings, which were delicious. The work was demanding in terms of concentration and both of us had aching wrists but it was most enjoyable and stimulating. Thank you Zoe for an absorbing experience which I would like to repeat, perhaps with a different stone. I'm hooked! Mike"
