Half Day Introductory Woodturning Course for 1 or 2 people near Salisbury Wiltshire

Description

I am a Registered Professional Turner based in the beautiful Avon Valley, 20 minutes North of Salisbury, in the middle of Salisbury Plain. All my pairs courses are run from my well-equipped workshop, where I have two lathes so you will be hands on straight away. (I also run full day courses for both one and two people, please see my listing for a Full Day Introductory Woodturning Course). The session will introduce you to the basic tools and techniques of woodturning and will aim to give you a brief introduction to both spindle and bowl turning. Most students leave with at least two pieces that they have made. I am happy to teach youngsters between 14 and 18 as long as an adult accompanies them for the duration of the course. You should wear comfortable clothing that you do not mind getting a little dusty and have shoes suitable for a workshop, no open toed sandals or flip-flops. A smock and personal protective equipment will be provided.

What's included in the price?

The aim is to enjoy the session. All tools, wood and personal protective equipment will be provided and the items you make are yours to take home. We will stop for tea/coffee/biscuits mid-way through the session so you can gather your thoughts and discuss your progress.

George has been turning for over 15 years and become a full time turner in 2017 on retiring from the army. He founded Butterwood in 2019 to put his woodturning on a business footing and was accepted onto the Register of Professional Turners the same year, joining the RPT committee two years later. He exhibits in local galleries and art markets in the Salisbury area and is passionate about the craft and very keen to promote it and pass on his skills.

"This was a great half day - quite intense with lots to absorb. I wish I’d done a full day to give me more time to get to grips with the various techniques. George is a hugely enthusiastic tutor, clearly passionate about wood turning. He pulls out all the stops to pack as much into the session as possible. You really get your money’s worth. We were cutting wood on the lathe within minutes of our arrival and my friend and I both came home with a Christmas tree, a spinning top and a little bowl that we’d made. I was amazed by the quality of the pieces we were able to produce, even though we were absolute beginners. It’s a bit addictive and I suspect George will be seeing more of me. "
