Willow Weaving: Berry Basket
Description
An ideal beginner’s basketry workshop. You’ll make a small, beautifully functional willow basket — perfect for garden produce, foraging, or displaying natural treasures. The finished basket measures approximately 6 inches wide and 4–5 inches high. Starting with a slath, you’ll weave the base, insert the stakes to form the “cage,” and shape the sides. A simple border completes the top before you fit a handle bow and wrap it securely. You’ll have access to a selection of willow varieties so your finished basket reflects your own style and taste. A great introduction to the essential skills of traditional basket making. Willow is a marvellous and timeless, traditional material used in making a variety of baskets and many other items both practical and sculptural. The workshop is designed for adults of any creative level and is the perfect way to spend the day meeting and working alongside like minded people. Chaz Friend is the willow artist behind Wayside Willow, sharing the craft of willow weaving with schools, community groups and adults across the Midlands and beyond. After 24 years as a primary teacher, Chaz followed his passion for heritage crafts and has been teaching willow weaving since 2014. Friendly, patient and endlessly enthusiastic about the possibilities of willow, Chaz brings warmth, humour and deep knowledge to every workshop. The course will take place in our Heritage Craft Barn at Stanwick Lakes, a beautiful 750-acre nature reserve and visitor attraction in the heart of Northamptonshire’s Nene Valley.
