Description

Textured ceramics. Human beings have been applying texture to their clay pots for decoration from the earliest times. The oldest known vessels from 18,000 years ago found in Japan, were decorated with simple textures using string and human thumbnail. Texture can be made by both impressing into the clay and applying more clay to the surface. During this workshop we will explore some of the ways textures can be used in ceramics. We will start with some test tiles, playing with found objects such as grasses, cogs, corrugated card, fabrics and even specific texture-making tools. We will burnish, carve, impress and apply texture in random, organised and patterned ways. We will then move on to make a vessel using slabs of textured clay and another using the Japanese Kurinuki technique. All materials and tools are provided although you are very welcome to bring items with interesting textures with you to try. At the end of the day, Debbie will take your work back to her studio fir glazing and firing. The pots will be ready for collection in about 4-6 weeks. Materials: Materials will be provided by the tutor. The approximate cost of these will be £30 to include clay, glazing and firing, payable to the tutor during the course.
