Description

Off-grid solar power - a two part course. Join us for this two-part training and increase your understanding of and build confidence with off-grid solar power. First session: Saturday 10th May 1:30pm - 5pm Second session: Saturday 17 May 1:30pm - 5pm. Please ensure you can attend BOTH sessions. Are you interested in going off-grid with solar power, but feeling overwhelmed by the complexity of the system? Are you unsure what an off-grid solar system can do for you? Then our two-part course on off-grid solar power is perfect for you! Led by Dr. Chris Vernon, a chartered electrical engineer with 5 years experience living off-grid and commercial experience designing off-grid solar systems for telecommunications, this course aims to empower you to embark on your own off-grid solar projects. In the first part of the training, you'll learn about the theory of off-grid solar, including the pros, cons, and compromises associated with it. You'll also gain familiarity with system components such as batteries, charge controllers, inverters and the difference between AC and DC. In the second part of the course, you'll get hands-on experience by working in groups to dimension, design, and cost up two systems. You'll design a small system suitable for a van and a larger system suitable for a house, and learn practical skills such as how to use a multimeter, wire solar MC4 connectors, and crimp copper cable lugs. The course will also cover health and safety when working with solar, ensuring that you can embark on your own off-grid solar project with confidence. This course is part of our up-skill and up-cycle series and generously funded by The Ashley Family Foundation. For a multitude of reasons the world is not always a fair and balanced place. With that in mind, we recognise the economic disparity present and want to help remove financial barriers to learning. We can offer free places for those who are facing financial hardship. Our definition of financial hardship is those who are finding it hard to meet essential everyday costs such as food and shelter, those who may rely on benefits or who have been long term unemployed.
