Description
Join me in my workshop at the edge of the beautiful North York Moors to make a neat ash stool, with wedged tenons and a mortice-and-tenoned under-frame, all in one day. In this compact version of my longest-running course, we start with wood that I've prepared in advance so you can crack straight on with the joinery and shaping. You'll learn how to work with both hand tools and machinery, which will give you an idea of how you might go about making other things in the future. The design is a simple piece that could be used as a stool or a side table, slim enough to fit into your home easily – perhaps sidled up to to a sofa or favourite chair. So, if you’ve got a hankering to make a real piece of furniture that you can take home, use every day and be proud of, then this is the ideal course for you. This is a fantastic first furniture project for beginners; even if you’ve never done any woodwork before, you will get on absolutely fine – have no fear! It's also an interesting time for those with a bit more experience, and people who come having made a few things, always like to see all my jigs and how I go about things.

Maker
I moved up to Yorkshire in 2023 to be closer to family, after over a decade of making furniture and teaching woodworking classes for adults at my workshop in Islington, North London. My new space has the same feel – it's a real, professional woodworking workshop where I make my own furniture and commissions in an environment full of my own random woodworking curiosities. Ever seen a Japanese grooving plane? 18th Century dovetail saw? What about a homemade belt sander? I look forward to welcoming you with plentiful tea, random anecdotes, and always good cheer.
FAQs
Yes there is, in the yard right outside the workshop and its free.
Nope! I give everyone a toolkit to use while they are in the workshop. It's all good stuff, my characteristic mix of old, new, Western and Japanese tools
