Description
You will make a Japanese toolbox using a wide variety of tools and techniques. It’s the same as the ones I use, maybe you have seen them if you have been to the workshop before. The class takes place at my professional workshop in Yorkshire over two days. This class was inspired initially by a design I had seen in a book and made for my own use, but has now been influenced by toolboxes I’ve seen whilst visiting Japan, so now uses thinner wood for the structure to save weight, and has a drawer. There is a beautiful simplicity to the design, which uses dado joints and wooden nails and has a lid that is held in place by a wedge. The drawer is long enough to fit most average sized Japanese saws and inside the main compartment are runners for trays that you can make as a separate project. WHAT WILL I LEARN? You will learn to efficiently use a mix of hand-tools, both western and Japanese, such as different kinds of saws, chisels, and planes. I'll also introduce you to some machines and handheld power tools such as the bandsaw, router, and orbital sander. We will look at how to size wood accurately by hand, using just a Japanese saw, and with a plane on a shooting board. We will also look at how to join wood edge to edge, dowels, router planes...and lots of other stuff. The wood you will use will be a high quality softwood such as red cedar, fir, pine or larch. I choose the best wood I can depending what’s available at the time of the course. WHO IS THIS SUITABLE FOR? You’ll get the most out of this course if you have developed some basic techniques first, such as by doing my joinery course or another similar course. But if you feel that you have enough self taught experience or just really, really want to make, one you’ll be ok. Feel free to contact me for a chat via the 'message the tutor' button below if you're wondering whether this is the right class for you. Please note that participants must be 18 years or older.

Maker
I moved up to Yorkshire in 2023 to be closer to family, after over a decade of making furniture and teaching woodworking classes for adults at my workshop in Islington, North London. My new space has the same feel – it's a real, professional woodworking workshop where I make my own furniture and commissions in an environment full of my own random woodworking curiosities. Ever seen a Japanese grooving plane? 18th Century dovetail saw? What about a homemade belt sander? I look forward to welcoming you with plentiful tea, random anecdotes, and always good cheer.

FAQs
There are two pubs/hotels in the town, just a 5 minute walk away from the workshop, The Kings Head and George and Dragon. There are lots of options locally so take your pick.
Yes there is, in the yard right outside the workshop and its free.
Nope! I give everyone a toolkit to use while they are in the workshop. It's all good stuff, my characteristic mix of old, new, Western and Japanese tools
