Description
Join us at the beautiful Golden Hill Wood in our new open side workshop nestled in the woods and built from the woods. Immerse yourself in nature in the Welsh countryside whilst learning a traditional skill with hand tools, camping and having an open fire. The shavehorse is an extremely useful tool that can be used for a huge number of different green woodworking projects. Making your first shavehorse opens up the possibility of continuing your love for the craft any time. Tea, Coffee and biscuits will be provided each day, and with free camping in the meadow and a firepit you can escape to our haven for the weekend with views over the black mountains and Wentwood forest. There is a compost loo on site but no shower. Celi has been working with green wood since 2010, they were self taught and then took on an apprenticeship in teaching the craft, woodland management and green building in 2017. Since then they have worked in forestry, making and selling their craft, and teaching. As well as setting up the project at Golden Hill Wood. Golden Hill Wood is run by myself, Celi and my partner, Reyna. It is a woman owned project and we endevour to use female and minority gender teachers wherever possible. We also engage the public through volunteer days and projects to aid the management of the land and help people to develop skills. Green woodworking is the skills used before we had power tools when people would take their limited tools into the wood and make all sorts of useful items. This is a 2 day course and you will go home with a completed shavehorse. In this course you will learn: • Sourcing and selecting wood for the shavehorse • Basic green woodworking or ‘bodging’ theory • Cleaving out blanks from a log • Using a side axe and/or carving axes to shape the legs / frame. • Using a shave horse and drawknife to shape legs. • Using hand tools to cut and finish the seat. • Using hand tools to shape the leg tenons and frame. • Fitting the shavehorse together • using a pole lathe to make some of the components. “Celi has a kind and gentle presence combined with a sense of deep knowledge and connection to the subject.
