Description
This 2-hour workshop will be led by Laura Rabb. Laura enjoys all kinds of crafts, but kumihimo is one she has continued for more than 15 years. Kumihimo is a Japanese braiding artform that is traditionally done with a round wooden stand called a marudai. A modern alternative to the marudai is using a foam disk to hold tension on the cords during braiding. This also makes the craft more affordable and very portable. The class will use the basic round foam disk which can be used to make many different braid structures. During the class we will learn two basic braids, traditional 8 warp kongo gumi and 7 warp “fill-the-gap”. Laura will also bring examples of other disk types and examples of other projects she has made. You will find that this craft is very relaxing and is great to take on travel.
What's included in the price?
After practicing the braids, the students will choose from a selection of cords to make their choice of a key chain, wrist strap or bag charm. All materials will be provided, and the disk used can be kept for future projects. The students will need to bring some coins to use as a weight for the braiding (about 40 grams).
