Description
Make a Portrait in Mosaic. Recreate an image of a famous person, friend, pet or family member into mosaic medium. With expert guidance by Debra, experienced Mosaicist & Teacher, you will learn how to simplify the image, choose a suitable colour palette, and learn how to cut, shape and place tiles to capture the particular qualities of your 'portrait'. You can choose to work in direct or indirect method (paper faced) depending on your level of experience and preference. The mosaic portrait will be rendered onto a 20 x 30cm or 30cm squared MDF board for you to grout and take home on the final session. This course will last 6 x 3 hr sessions. You can choose either the morning or afternoon sessions on Tuesday, Friday or Sunday. The group size is intimate (either one to one or up to 4 people) so you will get personal attention at all times. If you would like to work on both morning and afternoon sessions on any one day, please let me know in the messages. Although some experience of mosaic making is helpful, you will still get expert guidance if you are new to the medium including support with basic cutting skills, how to shape and lay tiles (andamento) and imaginative suggestions. What you will learn: * Understanding of varied laying styles for mosaic portraiture * Practice drawing and applying andamento for facial features * Apply colour palette using porcelain/vitreous glass for facial skin tone and texture for hair/clothing/background * Appreciation of Byzantine, Roman and modern laying styles * Choice of working in direct or indirect method

FAQs
You can be inspired by portraits by other artists and use them as your starting point. For example, there are many great portraits by Matisse with super colours that you can choose.
If you are not able to finish the mosaic by the time the 18 hours of course time has finished, you have the option to stay a further hour or come to another session to complete but without full tutor attention on that time/day.
Yes and No! Please send me a few images before the start of the course as some will be more suitable for mosaic making purposes than others. A clear head/body shot with contrast are the most suitable for portraits. Once your image is approved prior to the class, please print two copies to A4 size (30 x 20cm) or 30 x 30cm. One in Black and White, one in Colour. If you have any issues with this, please just message Debra
